3 Bull. Ibaraki Nat. Mus.,14: 1-13, pls Outcrops of the Unconformity between the Cambrian and Carboniferous Formations with 150 My Gap in the Hitachi Paleozoic Terrane Michio TAGIRI and Wataru KOIKE Accepted November 13, 2011 Abstract The unconformity between the Cambrian Akazawa Formation and the Carboniferous Daioin Formation is traced from the northeast to the southwest in the Hitachi Paleozoic Terrane. We newly describe the geological features of the unconformity in four outcrops. Basal conglomerates occur above the unconformity in the northeastern part, but not in the southwestern part. In the latter part, blocks of volcanic rock of the Akazawa Formation and pebbles of meta-granitoids are intercalated in the Daioin Formation. 16 Bull. Ibaraki Nat. Mus.,14: Species Composition of Wild Bees at the Okadaira Shell Mound, Ibaraki Prefecture, Central Japan Masaki HISAMATSU Accepted May 14, 2011 Abstract The species composition of wild bees was surveyed from March to November in 2007 at the Okadaira Shell Mound in Miho, Ibaraki Prefecture. A total of 1464 individuals belonging to 52 species in five families were collected. The most predominant family in the number of species was Halictidae15 spp., 271 individuals, followed by Apidae14 spp., 478 individuals. With respect to the number of individuals, Apidae was the largest family and Colletidaethree spp., 302 individualswas the second-largest one. The largest number of individuals207was collected for Colletes patellatus, and the second largest172 was for Apis cerana japonicaapidae. Ten of the 52 species were regarded as dominant species. The large number of individuals in Co. patellatus and Co. collaris might have resulted from an abundance of composite plants blooming in autumn, on which these bees foraged for pollen. The results were compared with those of previous studies performed in six areas in Ibaraki Prefecture. The number of species and the values for species evenness at the Okadaira site were ranked high among areas that have so far been studied in Ibaraki Prefecture. This area seems to have a richer bee fauna than the other studied areas. Lasioglossum primavera, Amegilla florea florea and Thyreus decorus, which were also regarded as dominant species in the Okadaira area, have not been recorded in large numbers in other areas of Ibaraki Prefecture. The species composition of wild bees at the Okadaira site is similar to Sugao and Mito, which are cultivated and/or urbanized. 27 Bull. Ibaraki Nat. Mus.,14: h Effectiveness of a Modified Cage Trap for Raccoon to Avoid Mis-capturing of Native Species in Ibaraki Prefecture, Central Japan Koji YAMAZAKI, Midori SAEKI, Masanori HIROHARA and Tsutomu SAKAMOTO Accepted April 7, 2011 Abstract The effectiveness of a modified cage trap, which was equipped with a specialized trigger for raccoon, was tested and compared with two types of commercial cage traps in Ibaraki prefecture. Camera traps were also set close to the modified traps to monitor approaching animals and to know how the triggers were activated. No differences were detected in capturing rates between the modified trap and the commercial traps ( vs raccoons/tn). On the other hand, mis-capturing of native mammals by the modified trap was very low, showing that use of this type of trap can minimize adverse effects on the native ecosystem, avoid accidental capture of pet animals, and decrease the laborious work of releasing non-target species. Widespread use of this trap in raccoon removal operations is recommended. 129 Bull. Ibaraki Nat. Mus.,14: A List of Macromycetes on the Grounds of Ibaraki Nature Museum Hiroyoshi KITAZAWA, Kei IMAMURA, Norimasa SHINDO and Mihoko UZAWA Accepted September 29, 2011 Abstract Macromycete flora was investigated mainly in coppices on the grounds of Ibaraki Nature Museum located in southwest Ibaraki Prefecture. Surveys were carried out continuously from June 1999 to February 2011, and 95 species were newly added to a preexisting list. As a result, the number of macromycete species recorded on the grounds of this museum has reached 292. We also mention the seasonal appearance of main species observed on the grounds of Ibaraki Nature Museum. 148 Bull. Ibaraki Nat. Mus.,14: Invited German Professor Hermann Ahlburg, the First Reporter on Plants from Mt. Tsukuba Minoru YAMAKAWA, Mihoko UZAWA and Kazuo OBATA Accepted April 26, 2011 Abstract The German scholar Hermann Ahlburg was invited by the Japanese Government to serve as a professor at the University of Tokyo Medical School in The next year, he traveled to Mt. Tsukuba via Sanuma Marsh in Ibaraki Prefecture. In 1878, he died of an infectious disease in Japan. An original paper on his trip to Sanuma March and Mt. Tsukuba, the first report on the plants of these areas, was published in 1879 and an article about his death appeared in the German journal Gartenflora. We translated these two articles from German into Japanese, traced his activity in Japan and clarified dates of his trip to Mt. Tsukuba. We also compared some plants described by Ahlburg with the present flora of these areas. Key words: Hermann Ahlburg, Meiji era, Mt.
