8 ISLAND CITY ISLAND CITY Island City has been developed as the advanced model town which drives Fukuoka growth in the future. The purposes of the project are enhancement of port functions as an international distribution hub, creation of comfortable urban space (living environment), developing hubs of new industries focusing on Asia and the world and improvement of transportation network in the eastern area. The Island City Project an artificial island construction in the eastern part of Hakata Bay has been carried out by the national government, Fukuoka Municipal Government and Hakata Port Development Co., Ltd. Approximately 97% (389.4ha) of land reclamation out of a total area of 401.3ha has been completed to date. At Island City, to further enhance port functions at the Port of Hakata, a deep approach channel and container berths have been constructed, creating an international logistics hub in the hinterland. The 15m-deep international container terminal was extended to 350m in January, Since the fiscal year 2011, the terminal and the adjacent 14m-deep international container terminal have been developed as the world-class eco-friendly container terminals by introducing electrification of cargo handling machines (transfer cranes). The industries with future potential to further grow and spread such as health, medicine and welfare are also being accumulated. And a comfortable residential area including environmentally-friendly green parks is being built, offering high-quality services to residents. The new community has been taking shape by opening of Fukuoka Business Creation Center, an elementary- junior high school, a children s hospital, a rehabilitation hospital, a kindergarten, a nursery school, a special nursing home, a hot bath facility, Vegefru Stadium (a fruit and vegetable wholesale market) and a market directly supplied by producers. In the future, the community plans to have facilities for health, medicine and welfare as well as centers to attract visitors. Furthermore, housing development has been under way in the ZeroCO2 town area, a model of the energycreating and energy-saving city by utilizing natural energy.
