22 Course Global career development Course No Credits 1.0Credits Grade 1, 2Year Timetable FallAB Mon5 Instructor Hiroya Igarashi, Hanako Suzuki Course Overview This course is designed for both international students and Japanese students to explore their potential career by facilitating their understanding of self and culture and improving their intercultural communication skills. The course will be offered in English. As active participation in class is valued and group tasks are assigned throughout the course, students are expected to be able to communicate in English. However, those with limited English skills who are highly motivated to learn to communicate in English and with other students with diverse cultural backgrounds are welcome to register. Note: Only students who are present at the first class can register for this course. Remarks Limited to 60 students. Lectures are conducted in English. CDP ( ) Course Type class exercises Subject Category Level Division Course Objectives 2 This course is designed for students to increase awareness on oneself and cultures, explore potential career, and acquire intercultural communication. This course is also designed for students to acquire ability to apply the knowledge acquired in classroom setting to outside of classroom, to reflect on yourself, and to respect others. Academic Goal Course Key Words Course Schedule 1. To increase awareness of oneself and potential career and obtain knowledge about cultures around the world. 2. To improve intercultural communication skills and will be able to negotiate with those from different cultures. 3. To acquire critical thinking skills, respect differences, and appreciate diversity. career,development 1. Oct. 3 Orientation: Hanako Suzuki Students will learn the outline of the course, expectations, and assignments will be explained, and students will practice talking in front of class by introducing themselves. 2. Oct. 17 Intercultural communication: Hanako Suzuki Students will learn about how culture can influence the views of self, emotions, and communication styles will be explained. 3. Oct. 24 Group work: Hanako Suzuki Students will raise awareness on career development. Students will be assigned to a group with which they will present the final presentation and will learn about the group-mates. 4. Oct 31 Self-reflection: Hanako Suzuki Students will reflect upon their past experiences and their transition from school to work world. 5. Nov. 8 From the past to the present: Hanako Suzuki Students will work on finding their core selves based on their reflections in the previous class. 6. Nov. 14 Mid-term presentation: Hanako Suzuki Each group will present the plans and structures of their final presentation and obtain feedback from classmates. 7. Nov. 21 Key expressions in various cultures: Hanako Suzuki Students will share key expressions used in their cultures and learn about how cultures may influence their values and perceptions. 8. Dec. 5 Career from present to the future: Hanako Suzuki A panelist will give a talk on her career in the international field. 9. Dec. 12 Designing my career: Hanako Suzuki Students will think about their career and future based on what they have learned about themselves and cultures and will map their actions for their college years and ahead.

23 Course Prerequisites Grading Methods Self- Directed Learning Method Outside the Classroom Textbooks and Supplementary Materials Office Hours and Contact Information Other (i.e. Expectations on Classroom Conduct and Decorum etc.) 10. Dec. 19 Final presentation: Hanako Suzuki Students will present the final presentation in front of class. It is strongly reccomended that students are present at the first class. 50% final presentation; 20% mid-term presentation; 20% reflection notes; 10% class participation Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills learned in class to work on their final presentation with their group-mates outside of class. All the materials will be provided in class. 2-5pm on Tuesdays at International Student Center, or by appointment Hanako Suzuki It is expected that students actively participate in and outside class in order to maximize their cross-cultural learning opportunities and that students respect the differences in cultural backgrounds and language levels. Fluency in English is not required; however, students are expected to understand the lectures and be able to communicate with classmates in English. Those who are motivated to improve their communication skills in English and to learn about cultures around the world are welcome to register.
