11 Clinical and Bacteriological Research of Sucrose/ Povidone-Iodine Ointment (U-PASTA kowa) for Pressure Sores and Skin Ulcers Osamu Nemoto Department of Dermatology,Tonan Hosptal North 1 West 6, Chuo-ku, Sapporo 060, Japan Akira Ohkawara Department of Dermatology,Hokkaido University School of Medicine North 14 West 5, Kita-ku, Sapporo 060, Japan Key words : pressuse sore, skin ulcer, MRSA, UPASTA Sucrose/ povidone-iodine ointment (U-PASTA kowa) was used to treat 53 patients with pressure sores and skin ulcers, and its bacteriological effect on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or other microorganisms was evaluated as well as its clinical efficacy. This ointment was effective against MRSA in 62.5% of the patients with pressure sores and 81.8% of those with skin ulcers. It was active against organisms other than MRSA in 76.5% and 66.7%, respectively. There was "moderate" or better clinical improvement after 8 weeks in 38.1% ("slight" or better improvement in 85.6%) of the patients with pressure sores and in 71.4% (92.9%) of those with skin ulcers. Microbial substitution occurred in only 5% of patients and side effects developed in 3 patients (5.7%). From these findings, U-PASTAkowa was judged to be both safe and effective for the treatment of pressure sores and skin ulcers, including lesions with MRSA infection. Skin Research, 38 : , 1996
