Here are the first four rules in Subject and Verb Agreement to avoid confusion. ( 正しい文では主語と動詞が呼応している必要があります主語が単数複数かにより動詞を活用させる 4 つのルールを学びましょう ) 1. The verb must agree with its subject in number. The singular subject takes singular verbs while plural subject takes plural verbs. ( 主語の単数複数に合わせ動詞を活用させます ) Examples ( 例 ): The secretary writes the reports. (singular) 秘書は報告書を書く ( 主語が単数 ) The members of the board meet monthly. (plural) 取締役たちには月一回の会議がある ( 主語が複数 ) 2. The groups of words or phrases that modify the subject do not affect the form of the verb. Always place the subject after the verb when the sentence is introduced by here and there. ( here もしくは there を使った文では動詞の後に主語がきます ) Examples: There is a mistake on the report that you submitted. (singular) あなたの提出した報告書にミスがあります ( 主語が単数 ) Here are the materials for your presentation. (plural) これがあなたのプレゼンの資料です ( 主語が複数 ) Remember: Always determine whether the subject is singular or plural to know what verb to use in a sentence. Nouns and verbs form their plurals in opposite ways. Add an s or es to the singular form of the noun to make it plural (e.g. machine machines) while remove an s or es from the singular form of the verb to make it plural (e.g. makes make).
