Study on Dark Tourism as Touristic Consumption in Contemporary Cambodia 3 Toul Sleng Genocide MuseumPol Pot s Tomb Ta Mok s Residence The Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia took power in 1975 and established the state of Democratic Kampuchea DK, but was overthrown in 1979. At least 1.7 million people died from starvation, torture, execution, and forced labor during this period. Since July 2006, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia the Khmer Rouge Tribunal has undertaken efforts to bring to trial senior leaders and those most responsible for crimes committed
during the DK period. However, in the nearly four decades since the atrocity, the process of coming to terms with the genocide initiated by Pol Pot has taken new directions; one of these, namely, the touristic consumption and encounter with the tragedy, is often referred to as dark tourism. This paper examines how a certain construction of modern Cambodian history contributes to dark tourism and how the government complements this process through its arrangement of genocide-related institutions, such as the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, Ta Mok s Residence, and Pol Pot s Crematorium. To this end, this paper will introduce findings from fieldwork in Phnom Penh and in Oddar Meanchey province.
