ALS A Case Study on the Living Environment of a Single ALS Patient YAMAMOTO Shinsuke Abstract: In relation to the support needed for single ALS patients who have no family, little research has been accumulated in the architectural field compared with the medical and welfare fields. This paper focuses on one patient, a year old man who had had ALS for years, recording the social services he received and amount of care he required and evaluating the conditions of his living space in order to clarify the dwelling and support needs of single ALS patients living at home. The following results were obtained. ( ) The patient s problems with his living environment were not related to the built space as much as an insufficient amount of care, because the symptoms of his progressive disease advanced faster than the social service system could respond. ( ) Because the patient always required caregivers, it was difficult for him to have private time and space, even when living at home. The paper concludes that architecture specialists are not always necessary for improving a patient s space. Instead, for improving a patient s living environment and privacy, it is more important that there is an adequate number of caregivers and familiar people to quickly adjust the patient s space when necessary.
