Moodle Abstract Moodle is a course management system (CMS), a free, open source software package designed under sound pedagogical principles, to help both educators and researchers create effective online learning communities. It is useful and convenient to set it up if we know some basics such as PHP language and MySQL database and teach any classes through Web pages using Moodle after it is installed on a Web server. The author has been using it to teach various courses including semester-long graduate classes since in a distance-learning setting to promote active learning of the enrolled students. This paper mainly describes two graduate classes taught in three-different locations (Osaka, Kyoto, Shiga) through a video conferencing system at Ritsumeikan University while using Moodle packages. Their objectives, syllabi, assignments, forum discussions, evaluations, and the pros and cons of using Moodle to teach these academic courses are discussed.
