137 Korean Society and Banned Songs since 1970 s In Korea, the 1970s was a decade of policy adjustment The military government, established as a result of the Coup D etat in 1961, had administered for more than ten years. The military government banned night time passing, followed by the restriction of men to keep hair long, as well as women to wear short skirts. Subsequently, literature, movie, and music became the objects of censorship, in terms of political, economical, and social grounds. This ultimately led to the extermination of those considered as threats to the government and public safety; not to mention that such action was undergone for political justification. In terms of economical criteria, the 70s was a decade in which labor forces began making movement for human rights, as the high growth of the Korean economy suppressed them from the preceding era. Foreign cultures, mainly the American value, had great influence upon the young, war-ignorant generation. Hence, it was common to see young people wearing jeans and communicating their message through folk songs, which was, strictly regulated. The Disk law promulgated in 1968 left 222 songs to be disposed. Prohibition of songs and the regulation of freedom of speech continued for twenty years, until 1987. The thesis examines the political, economical, and social issues surrounding prohibited songs in the 1970s. After categorizing the reasons of banning songs and looking at the List of Prohibited Songs published by the Logic Board Performance in Korea in 1983, the section analyzes Korean society in those days. 1 1.1 2011 1.2 1.3 2 1970 2.1 2.2 3 3.1 1970 3.2 3.3 3.4 4 4.1 4.2 5
