82 THE BOTANICAL MAGAZINE. [Vol. LVI, No. 662. Resume. From the external characters, the study being stressed ojl length, width, weight, color shades, and forms, ergots may be divided into several groups. The grouping, as a whole, seems to coincide with the natural affinity- of the host plants, although a further study remains in certain group. In Poaeoideae-Hordeeae, the ergots of Secale cereale, Agropyron semicostatum, and Elynzvs dahuricus are similar each other, but the ergot of E. mollis is distinct from the group. In Poaeoideae-Festuceae, the ergot of Festuca rubra is apparently classified in the Secale-group, and the ergots of three species of Phragniites are quite different from it, forming another group. Calaragrostis Epigeios var. d ensi flora, only one plant belonging to Agrostoideae-Agrostideae, has very small sized ergot which will be distinguishable from other groups. The ergot of Zoysia japonica (C~aviceps yanagawaensis ToGASHI) in Panicoideae-Zoysieae is distinctly different from others in many respects. In Panicoideae-Alidropogoneae, the ergot of Spodiopogon sib iricus shows characteristics unconformable to any of the groups. The ergots of two species of Miscanthus form a distinct group.
