Richmond Elementary October, 2013 The Mission of the Oregon PTA is to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation. Grace Under Pressure This past summer I had the privilege of serving as a chaperone on the 5th grade trip to Japan. After so many years of being involved in the school as a parent volunteer, I assumed I knew exactly how far our kids had come between kindergarten and 5th grade. How wrong I was. Richmond offers a unique learning opportunity we all know that. By enrolling our children here, we expect them to receive a strong foundation in the Japanese language while meeting all English language standards, along with those for math, science, etc. By our school s test scores we see we are doing all that quite well. What isn t so readily apparent in those scores but what came shining through during the trip to Japan is that in addition to the stellar academic experience our children are receiving here at Richmond, they are also learning how to be exceptional human beings. Compassion, maturity, perseverance, humility, patience, adaptability these are some of the traits I witnessed in our students in Japan on a daily basis. They listened, engaged, followed instructions, were flexible, had positive attitudes and tried countless new things enthusiastically. And most of the time they did all this in Japanese. So what s my point? Simply this: Richmond is a very special place, with very special people educating our children our whole children. And the results are striking. With the countless calls for dollars and time and resources, it is easy to become jaded, feel overburdened, and see only what isn t happening in our public schools. But today I urge you to stop and look around our halls, and notice what is happening. Because it is significant, and doesn t happen everywhere. Because it is greater than the sum of its parts. Because it is working. We are off to a great start to another exceptional year here at Richmond. Take pride in being a part of this amazing community of educators and learners, and know that at the end of the day the measure of success is how our children do once they leave these halls. And boy, do they do well. PPS CLOTHING CENTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED OCTOBER 17 Did you know there s a huge clothing center inside Marshall High School, providing free clothing to our public school kids? This PTA-sponsored Clothing Center provides warm winter coats, new socks and underwear, jeans, and much more for our students in need. (You do not need to be eligible free or reduced lunches to utilize the Clothing Center.) Every Monday and Thursday mornings the Clothing Center lobby fills with families and groups of students waiting their turn to go through the racks and select needed items. All PPS schools are requested to send 3-5 volunteers to staff the PTA Clothing Center two days each year, to help families sort through their options and get what they need. Richmond s first service date for this academic year is October 17th. PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT MOVING FORWARD Last Spring the PTA membership voted to embark on a capital campaign to raise over $400K for playground improvements, the most significant of which is a new turf field to replace the existing grass field in the south end of the Richmond school grounds. Playground Improvement Committee Chair Pat Lando kick-started the improvements over the summer, overseeing the creation of two wall ball walls and new playground striping (coming soon). Many thanks to Pat and his children Reed and Piper, for all the time they spent on the Richmond grounds this summer to make certain the year got off to a great start. SUPER GREEN TEAM KEEPS ON ROLLING The school year started off with a bang with the SGT sponsored Richmond Nature Path next to the school parking lot now a functional and beautiful green space for our community and the neighborhood. You may have also noticed the incredible tile mural that was developed by Richmond dad Greg Byrd thank you! Stop by and take a look it will blow you away! Finally, stay tuned for the final phases of the project, which will include a school-wide ribbon cutting ceremony and community planting party. The south veggie garden looks great too, thanks to numerous Richmond families who kept it watered and maintained all summer. Kudos also to the new and familiar faces who pitched in at our first Breakfast in the Garden party. Please join us for the next breakfast work party, Saturday, October 19th, which will focus on getting plants into the new nature pathway. Also, look for our new Friday Farm Stand featuring organic greens grown in Richmond's garden, being sold at Rich Coffee on Fridays. With energetic involvement from new families, and many wonderful activities taking shape, the SGT has a big 2013/14 agenda, including a school-wide recycling initiative, ongoing alternative transportation initiatives, and much more. I am excited to support our teachers this year by recruiting Room Representatives for each classroom teaching team.
