The Joint Class between Japanese Learners and Japanese Students What we can see from the Comments Akemi YASUI Abstract The purpose of this paper is to report the results of the joint class between 20 intermediate-advanced level Japanese learners and 10 Japanese students held in fall semester of 2007. This class took place 8 times, and both Japanese learners and Japanese students considered the joint class very favorable. From the comments of each class and the results of the survey, it was found that Japanese learners seek from the class: periodic chances to meet Japanese students, opportunities for Japanese practice, and intercultural education. On the other hand, Japanese students seek: periodic chances to meet Japanese learners, a different perspective on Japan and Japanese culture experiencing a different culture. Unfortunately, the number of subjects in the class, including both Japanese learners and Japanese students, is limited due to the regulations of Nanzan University. Furthermore, there are also other problems, including the difference in the semester calendar between Japanese learners studying in CJS and Japanese students studying in other departments, as well as the difference in credits received by each for the course. However, there are many positive aspects involved in conducting the exchanges among the students from different cultural backgrounds. We should consider the importance of offering the chances for students to interact with other cultures.
