Community Centers and Lifelong Learning: Contemporary Challenges in Lifelong Education and Learning IIDA Tetsuya : In Japan, great importance is being placed on full development of education and learning. The English term lifelong learning implies learning for a long period covering early childhood to late in life. This paper presents future challenges in lifelong education from sociological viewpoints by focusing on the roles played by local community centers. To discuss lifelong education, approaches are made from three aspects. The first is the historical transition of community center activities, originating in the postwar era, from village life-oriented to urban lifeoriented, which is followed by representative examples of local community center activities and a description of several problems that remain to be resolved. The second aspect is the five directions observed in relations between local community centers and lifelong education, which have been argued about from various pedagogic viewpoints. In contrast to such a philosophy-based approach, this paper emphasizes the importance of focusing more attention on children by using a case study in progress in Kawanishi City. The significance of focusing on children is addressed by considering problems confronting young people and adults, as well as relations between them. In particular, the need is underlined for local community center activities to promote cooperation among families, schools and local communities. Based on these two aspects, a new role for community centers which have tended to be undervalued in recent years is lastly proposed as a medium to promote cooperative relationships among families, schools and local communities. Moreover, theoretical and practical challenges in need of resolution are presented in pursuing such a function of community centers. : community center, lifelong education, character formation, relationship building, independence and cooperativeness Professor by Special Appointment, Ritsumeikan University
