Abstract Kinds of news people like and dislike and the formation of social reality through their conversation Miyuki KATAYAMA, Yoshiro KAWAKAMI Yasuyuki KAWAURA, Shinkichi SUGIMORI The purpose of this study is to investigate what kind of news people like and dislike and what kind of news people talk about with their acquaintances. 914 adults responded to our questionnaire. It included psychological scales we proposed including three subscales ( Personal development, Value of humor, and Need for a release ) and the cognition and conversation concerning news. A psychological scale RFT Readiness for Free Time enables us to clarify how news information was appreciated. 1. People with high Personal development often talk about the themes which are useful for their next behavioral choices. They liked news concerning a world record in sport. For them, news seemed to be practical or to encourage themselves. 2. People with high Value of humor often talk about the themes which made their friends laugh or the themes about their acquaintances. They tend to form their social reality through their conversation with their friends. Also they prefer the news of scandals of the politicians. For them, news seemed to be a tool for solidarity with friends. 3. People with high Need for a release had less themes to talk about with their acquaintances except for complaints. They tend to avoid a conversation with their friends. They especially dislike a conversation on the news of tragedy. For them, news information seemed to be avoided. These results are discussed based on how significant the news information is for each person.
