This is a preliminary study to investigate the risk factors, which contribute the high suicidal rate in Miyazaki Prefecture, using the Pearson, s correlation analyses. The annual suicidal rate and 513 indices of demographic, socio-economic, educational, labor, residential, financial, health conditions were obtained for the 47 prefectures. The correlation analyses revealed that 1) the long sunshine hours in Miyazaki is protective against suicide; 2) there are many common risk factors in Miyazaki and Akita or northern prefectures in Japan; and 3) some factors such as alcohol consumption, gambling with Pachinko, and small amount of personal and/or household saving seem to be comparatively specific risk in Miyazaki prefecture not only for males but females. These results suggested that, at least a part of countermeasures should be planned for these specific risk factors in order to decrease the suicidal rate in Miyazaki prefecture. Key words: suicidal rate, alcohol consumption, Miyazaki prefecture, psychosocial risk factors. 18 2 19 10 19 10
