Abstract In recent years, tourist visits to locations that have appeared in manga or anime have attracted increasing attention. This sightseeing phenomenon is a form of content tourism and has been observed for many years. Tours that visit location sites used as movie stages have created a tourism boom, making a significant impact on particular areas and the tourist industry. This paper researches cinema tourism, focusing on movies that have been released in theaters. Historical changes in Japanese cinema tourism are also described. Analyzing the present condition of this form of tourism suggests possibilities for the future. The theoretical aim of this paper is to explore cinema tourism in Japan and to accumulate empirical evidence to explain this form of tourism.
