The Portrayal of the Nisei in Naomi Hirahara s Summer of the Big Bachi In novels written about World War II and the experiences of Japanese Americans, the Nisei are often portrayed in their youth as people who suffer stoically in concentration camps with their Issei parents or fight injustice heroically by joining the army to fight in Europe. However, in Naomi Hirahara s Summer of the Big Bachi, she presents the Nisei in old age in the aftermath of the war and the doubtful future of the Japanese American community represented by the identity-challenged Sansei children. In the first novel of her mystery series, she introduces an elderly Nisei gardener named Mas Arai as the unlikely hero. He did not fight in the war nor was he incarcerated in a concentration camp; instead, he, as a Kibei, born in the U.S. but educated in Japan, is a hibakusha, a survivor of the atomic bomb that hit Hiroshima. Arai thus stands between two worlds and two cultures, not quite able to assimilate into the American mainstream

8 (70) completely yet also rather suspicious of the Japanese whom he sees as foreign. In my presentation, I will examine the way Hirahara portrays the various types of Nisei and how they interact with each other, with their Sansei children, with other Americans, and with the Japanese.
