Expression and its Meaning in Psychotherapy Minoru Katou This paper has two aims, One is to examine the nature and characteristics of self-expression in psychotherapy. The other is to examine the relationship between self-expression and psychotherapy. There are different approaches to psychotherapy based on different schools of thought. The analysis in this paper is based on the work of C. G, Jung. Psychotherapy is the process of dissolving client psychic tension and complexes. Through giving expression to complexes the client becomes conscious of them. Self-awareness plays an important role in this process. When we look at expression in this light, we can see it is an important element in psychotherapy. Expression can be considered in the following four ways: Placing importance on expression in words. Placing importance on bodily expression. Placing importance on experience as expressed through producing artworks. Placing importance on innerpsychologicalactivity. Further, from the standpoint of a psychical cure, expression can be viewed as having the following two axes: The primary axis is the outward versus inward axis of expression. The secondary axis is the outward versus inward axis of therapy. In addition, I came to understand: The need to control expression.the importance of not expressing. The problems of excessiveexpression. client therapist
