This paper traces the history of Hawaii s Bon dances and investigates why some of the oldest Bon dances have been passed on from generation to generation, while others have not. It takes up the case of Iwakuni Ondo that originated in the Iwakuni district of Yamaguchi prefecture, and which is one of the three traditional Bon dances still performed in Hawaii. Iwakuni Ondo entails not just a single bon dance song, but includes many songs based on historical stories and events, as well as new songs composed to reflect people s lives both in Japan and Hawaii. The paper examines why the Japanese in Hawaii love Iwakuni Ondo from the perspectives of the characteristics of Iwakuni Ondo songs, concentrated immigration from Yamaguchi prefecture, and the function of the supporting organization, Iwakuni Odori Aikoukai, and its founder and famous singer, James Kunichika. In order to address the theme, the author examined the start and growth of Japanese dishes (restaurants) in Sao Paulo, and used restaurant guides to confirm the position of Japanese dishes (restaurants) relative to other ethnic foods. Based on the survey, the author clarified the image of Japanese dishes, and examined the symbolic relationship between Japanese foods and Brazilian and other ethnic foods. Last of all, the dining out behavior of citizens mainly at Japanese restaurants reflects a certain characteristic acceptance of Japanese dishes. Keywords

In 2013, SUAC conducted a project in which bilingual illustrated books written by a former Brazilian student were distributed to elementary schools in the city. This served as a means for current Brazilian students to visit the homes of Brazilian families and find out their educational needs. Feedback was given to the local community through the Forum on Intercultural Children s Education (FICE). This paper reports the details of the project and the results of the home visit survey. This is a translation of the first half of Shuzo-kojo Enkaku-shi ( history of a sake brewery ) currently owned by Fazenda Monte deste do Brasil. This brewery was completed in 1935 in Fazenda Monte deste, a suburb of Campinas, Brazil. The brewery s production of Azuma Kirin sake marked the beginning of commercial sake breweries in Brazil, and was closely linked with the footsteps of pre-war Japanese communities in Brazil. This is an introduction to the background behind the production of Azuma Kirin. Keywords

This study is an interim report on haiku poems written by Japanese immigrants while staying in WRA camps. It is highly likely that each camp had at least one active haiku coterie group which would have compiled a collection or anthology of haiku poems as a memento of their camp life, only six collections have been found. This report surveys eight collections, including two that were dedicated to the Nisei soldiers killed in action. After a brief description of each collection, some representative haiku poems are presented. Keywords:World War II, WRA Camps, Issei, Haiku

Sugano regained his health and then returned to Seidai Ryo of the Student Association of Japan, where he resumed the activity. However, as war broke out between Japan and the US, he gradually had to deal with tough situations, both financially and mentally. At the same time, he began to feel skeptical about the conceptual manner of the activity as instructed by a leader who graduated from an imperial university. The notion that imperial universities were superior to private universities, and that dormitory grouping favored the students of imperial universities kept him away from the activity. In June 1942, the Student Association of Japan voluntarily disbanded, followed by Seidai Ryo also being dissolved by the end of 1942. Sugano then began his life as a lodger at that time, with the foothold gained at Waseda University s Mental Science Seminar.
