This study, on the subjects of Western and Japanese male portraits, attempts to discover whether it is possible to express the difference in representation, through the performance of spatial frequency analysis on parts of the face. I performed an analysis on six portraits: self-portraits of Goya, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Sesshuu Tōyō; Portrait of Pope Julius II by Raphael; and a portrait of Minamoto no Yoritomo. Using the developed program, I determined the spatial frequency power value of the portraits and compared the results. I found that, in the low spatial Journal of the Faculty of Human Sciences, Kobe Shoin Women s University, No. 4 March 2015, 75 86. No. 4 2015 3 75 86.
76 Journal of the Faculty of Human Sciences, Kobe Shoin Women s University No. 4 March 2015 frequency band, the power values of the Japanese paintings were lower than those of the Western paintings. In the high spatial frequency band, the power value of Van Gogh s self-portrait was particularly large. The findings suggest that the power values of the low spatial frequency band reflect the three-dimensional appearance of the face, while the power values of the high spatial frequency band reflect the texture of the skin.
