St. Paul s Annals of Tourism Research SAT No.17 Global Practices of Touristic Development Destination -Case Study of International Marriages in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka- Nirmala RANASINGHE International marriages between tourists and locals arose by the 1970 s with the development of sex tourism. At that time, affluent male tourists from developed countries traveled to developing countries in order to find exotic pleasures, which caused the emergence of new tourism phenomenon called sex tourism. Though the onset of sex tourism has being marked by male tourists, currently female tourists are also playing a major role in that context, introducing a new phenomenon called romance tourism. There is research focused on relationships between tourists and locals, which has examined international marriages in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic, but only a few studies have mainly discussed international marriages which originate in the tourist destination. One of the Sri Lankan researchers has also pointed out that international marriages between male tourists and local females could be found by the time of the 1970 s in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, but no thorough study has been done to identify the characteristics and the impact of international marriages. Therefore it is believed that there is a necessity to research the emergence and development of international marriages in the tourist destinations of Sri Lanka. Thus the objective of this article was to examine the process of international marriages, their expectations and the impact on local individuals and society in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. Methods utilized included in-depth interviews with the local female and male spouses and foreign spouses (Japanese females) who settled down in Hikkaduwa, participant observation and literature review. Preliminary findings revealed that both the marriages involving local females-male tourists and those involving local males-female tourists can be found in Hikkaduwa, hence the historical transition process was analyzed in order to determine expected results. There were many international marriages involving local females during the 1970 s and 1980 s when many male tourists visited Sri Lanka, and international marriages involving local males became prevalent by the 20 th century with the increase of females travelling abroad. With regard to the local males international marriages, this article specifically addresses the marriages between beach boys and female tourists, since that phenomenon has become more frequent in recent years. The survey findings identified that whether the international marriage involves local females or local males, the main motivation is economic benefit, and they eventually use it as a ladder to success. After marriage, the prevalent pattern is to migrate to the foreign spouse s country, and especially beach boys migrate with the intention of working in Europe to gain prosperity, aiming to send money to their poorer family members or return in few years to start up a business of their own. Economic success followed by international marriage is eventually connected to the advancement of the social standards of individuals as well. The migration of local males and females and the visits to Europe by the parents of local spouses to see their children and grandchildren would never materialize until and unless the local males and females had gotten an opportunity of international marriage through tourism. Therefore it can be said that international marriages have caused great impacts not only on individuals, but also on the society as a whole.
