52 Bulletin of Hiroshima Jogakuin University : 1 22 Dec. 2002 1 2002 10 A case study: the counseling process of a mother with a difficult child Kyoko YAMASHITA Abstract I carried out 39 sessions of counseling during a period of about 1 year and 5 months with a mother worried about how to bring up her elementary school age boy. I introduced the process of the counseling, and gave consideration to psychological change of the mother and behavioral change of the boy. The boy has been moody since he was a small child, and the mother had formed the impression that her son was a difficult child. The boy had experienced the appearance, disappearance and reappearance of a nervous tic, which cycle had been repeated since he entered elementary school, and tended to show physical symptoms of anxiety and tension. I supported her childcare by carrying out counseling with her, and she came to reflect on her own childcare. At the same time, the farther started to become involved with his son in a positive manner. Initially a clear tendency was seen that the boy acted out his emotions, but gradually he became able to put his emotions into words.
