22 COPING SKILLS FOR VIOLENT AND AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR IN PSYCHIATRIC NURSING PRACTICE: "READING AND GRASPING OF THE SITUATION" AND "PHYSICAL READINESS" Minoru OKADA 1 ) Abstract : Violent and aggressive behavior observed in clinical psychiatry is attracting attention. Psychiatric nurses place themselves in such a high-risk situation and provide care for the security and protection of patients. The objective of this study was to clarify perception of psychiatric nurses about emergency situations and acute state of patients, processes through which they cope with such situations, and the mechanism of their intervention. For this purpose, the author presented detailed accounts of his own clinical experience of successful intervention in scenes of violence. and attempted to analyze and interpret nurses' responses by referring to these examples. As a result, "reading and grasping of the situation" and "physical readiness" were extracted as the perceptive mechanism or behavior of psychiatric nurses intervening in violent or aggressive behavior. and they were suggested to be derived from "accumulated clinical experience". This is considered to be a check-and-search system widely observed in highly competent clinicians. Key words: Inpatients. violent and aggressive behavior. intervention skills in psychiatric nursing. reading and grasping of the situation. and physical readiness 1) Faculty of Nursing.
