It has been an unexpectedly beautiful fall this year and a particularly busy but rewarding time since the last issue of. PAST EVENTS: The EJCA Annual General Meeting - October 2nd The AGM was well attended and followed by a delicious Japanese dinner catered by the Sushi Wasabi Restaurant. The Board members for the next year were voted in, and at the Board Retreat on November 12th, the following positions were assigned: President 1st Vice-President 2nd Vice-President Secretary Treasurer (interim) Directors: Stephanie Bozzer Brenda Madsen Jim Hoyano Dave Mueller Erin Munro Scott Sutton Rick Hirata Yoko Azumaya I appreciate Yoko and Dave's willingness to be nominated, and their enthusiasm about the opportunity to contribute to the association in the future. Thanks to Kevin Rempel and Bill Kiel for volunteering and being elected to the audit committee for the coming year, and to Daiyo Sawada for being on the committee last year. NAJC AGM - October 14th to 16th The following week, EJCA hosted the NAJC (National Association of Japanese Canadians) AGM. EJCA members were invited to attend the meetings as observers and to join the lunches and dinner. Several members attended the meetings and a larger number attended the Saturday dinner, benefiting from the opportunity to learn more about NAJC and to enjoy old acquaintances and to meet representatives from across the country. The Edmonton Kendo Club provided a demonstration during Saturday's lunch and responded to a number of questions from the audience. Then, before the Japanese buffet dinner on Saturday, we were treated to performances by the Karaoke Club and Wakaba-kai. These were followed by a Sake-tasting event lead by Masa Shiroki from Artisan SakeMaker at Granville Island and Ken Noma (NAJC President). If you are a sake expert or a sake novice (or somewhere in between), list five sake available in Edmondon, in the order you prefer. In the next issue, we will give you the names of the sake tasted at the AGM and the preference of the tasters based on several criteria. This year, the NAJC established the Dr. Gordon Hirabayashi Human Rights Award which recognizes an individual or organization in Canada that has contributed to the development or promotion of human rights and equity. Although Gordon was not able to attend due to health, his wife Susan Carnahan and his daughter Marion Oldenburg from were present for the unveiling of the award by Lillian Nakamura President s Corner Maguire, NAJC Vice-President and Chair of the Human Rights Committee. There will be more about the NAJC AGM in the Ken Noma President's Report. The efforts of Sanae (Chair) and the organizing committee, drivers, performers, general helpers, John Priegert (Centre Manager), Banzai Restaurant (Saturday lunch), and Mikado (Saturday dinner), were all essential in hosting this successful event. Thank you! Thanks also to all the EJCA members who gave impromptu tours of the Centre and whose presence made the AGM a welcoming and friendly occasion. Closing of the Japan Disaster Fund-raising - October 29th A summary of the Committee's work and results are in a separate article, along with information about Toshiaki Koike's interactive art installation which has now found a new home at the Mennonite Centre for Newcomers. Explore Japan - November 1st and 2nd With the success of last year's one-day program, EJCA was asked by Alberta Education and the Alberta Japanese Teachers Association, to hold the program for Grade 10 students who are studying Japanese language for two days this year. The addition of one day allowed approximately 300 students to participate. The instructors, demonstrators, speakers and performers did a wonderful job sharing many aspects of Japanese culture (traditional and current) through this participatory program. More about this program in a separate article. EJCA Fall Bazaar - November 5th The help of all volunteers and donors was much appreciated in making this the most financially successful bazaar yet. Ken Noma 2011 Edmonton AGM 4 November - December 2011 NAJC President s Message - November 2011 The 34 delegates and alternates attending the NAJC annual general meeting at the Edmonton Japanese Community Centre (EJCC) on the weekend of October 15th experienced first-hand the famous Western hospitality. The logistical support was flawless like the weather. Under the leadership of Cathy Tennant, President of EJCC, there was a constant hive of supporters who discreetly attended to the needs of delegates and ensured the smooth transition of activities. We were warmly treated as members of the Edmonton Nikkei ohana (family). The forerunner of the current EJCC was the Edmonton Japanese Community Club Society that was officially registered with the Alberta government in 1976. The EJCC is partnered with the Argyll Community League and the current building was established in 1994. The building is large and airy with many windows which welcomes the Alberta sunshine and affords a beautiful view of the surrounding park. The building is a wonderful memorial to the Nikkei community of Edmonton. The mostly Nisei volunteers reminded me of the small number of dedicated people who put in long hours to ensure the survival of Nikkei communities across Canada. We must keep those cultural doors open for our youth who will one day as part of their quest for self-identity as Japanese Canadians - enter. In the reports presented at the meeting, member organizations listed a myriad of programmes and activities undertaken in the past year: taiko, odori, karaoke, language schools, mochi tsuki, golf tournaments, obon, film nights, storytelling, human rights, keiro kai, shinnen kai, salmon barbeques, martial arts, fujin kai, heritage preservation initiatives, sake tasting, Japan Relief, matsuri, ghost town tours, digital storytelling, curling bonspiel, annual picnics and other events reflective of their region but always with the intent to engage the younger generation and to honour the Nikkei heritage. I was happy to see, in attendance, several young people in the audience and look forward to having them take a leadership role in the NAJC soon. We officially welcomed 7 new individual members and 2 new organizations (Yukon, Victoria) to the NAJC. It is my personal goal to continue to increase membership across Canada. During dinner, Lillian Nakamura Maguire, NAJC Vice President and Human Rights Committee Chair, unveiled the new Dr. Gordon Hirabayashi Human Rights Award which recognizes an individual or organization in Canada that has contributed to the development or promotion of human rights and equity. The award will be given every two years. We were delighted to have Gordon s partner, Susan Carnahan and daughter Marion Oldenburg in attendance for the unveiling of the award. The Kamloops and Area Chapter of the NAJC, with support from the Vernon Japanese Cultural Society, has graciously volunteered to host the 2012 AGM. The Myth Call for Moshi-Moshi Editors As I noted in my previous article, the NAJC is faced with financial challenges and we have had to cut back on administrative efficiencies in order to prevent further erosion of community based programmes and grants. The national executive committee must re-examine its financial paradigm to find a more effective use of the limited funds and will engage in an aggressive sustaining fund drive. The National Executive Board will be meeting in Winnipeg in January 2012 for a strategic planning session to examine the current health of the NAJC and re-examine its vision and mission statements and translate that into effective programmes. There is a persistent myth that non-profit cultural organizations that join the NAJC will lose their charitable tax status nothing can be further from the truth. Art Miki challenged this myth in 2006 when he held discussions with the Charities Secretariat of the Revenue Canada Agency. Art s report noted that: As long as the registered charity remains independent in its operation, they can be members of other organizations that are not charitable in status (i.e. NAJC). As evidence of this, over 50% of the current NAJC member organizations are cultural centres. There appears to be a paradigm shift towards amalgamating the JCCA/NAJC with charitable Nikkei cultural organizations in order to consolidate financial and human resources for such a small community as ours, this makes eminent sense. I support such a move and am aware of two current member organizations that are exploring this option. The EJCA is looking for two volunteer editors for the Moshi-Moshi newsletter. The newsletter is published every two months and is an important means of communication within the Edmonton Japanese Community Association. The editors will be responsible receiving and editing the articles, layout and compilation of the content, and ensuring the distribution of the completed newsletter. The editors will also need to translate some of the articles. Candidates will need to have a computer and feel comfortable compiling and editing the documents. The EJCA will purchase editor software if required. One candidate will need to have strong English skills and the other candidate strong Japanese skills, as the newsletter is bilingual. Currently, the editor duties take approximately 2 days per issue but may take a bit longer during the transition. We would like to begin transitioning this role to the new editors in March, 2012. The current editors will be available to work with the new team to ensure a smooth transition of the role for several issues. Louise Wong The EJCA Bazaar takes place one day a year but the preparations have been underway for months & weeks to ensure the success of this major event. Two groups of experienced cooks had been busy making mochi and daifuku which are highly in demand at the Bazaar. Other volunteers collected items for the silent auction & general sales, priced donations for the non-food sales tables, delivered posters to advertise the event, recruited community members to help the day of the event and in general took care of all the many details and crises that arose during the preparations. Another group of cooks that was making various bento (lunch boxes) and udon started preparation in October and cooked ingredients on Friday, November 4th. Saturday, November 5th, turned out to be a lovely fall day with no hint of the snow which had been predicted earlier in the week. Although the Bazaar was not scheduled to begin until 11:30 a.m., volunteers had been arriving at the Centre as early as 7 am to do the last minute cooking, prepare bento boxes, put out tables & chairs, price the baked goods, display the nonfood sales items & set up the silent auction. Shortly before 11:00, volunteers were treated to a light lunch and some socializing before the doors officially opened. Visitors who arrived early were able to browse through the non-food sales area in the side lounges. At 11:30, everyone who had been eagerly waiting for the doors to open, were able to enter and choose from the assortment of food available-the bento boxes, sushi, udon, oshiruko, mochi, daifuku and home baked goods. The tables in the main hall and overflow area were soon filled EJCA 2011 Fall Bazaar with people enjoying their lunch and chatting with families and friends. Tea and udon servers were kept busy all afternoon filling tea cups and delivering udon orders throughout the hall. After finishing their meals, many in attendance went to look at and bid on the silent auction items - a Japanese Kimono and several Japanese dolls, pottery pieces & vases, tea cups, paintings, restaurant gift certificates, etc. Then patrons made their way over to the non-food sales areas where a large variety of goods, old and new, Japanese and Canadian were on sale. The volunteers in this section were kept busy as almost everyone found something they just had to buy. The Bazaar and Silent Auction officially came to a close at 1:30 p.m. with volunteers tired but happy that everything went well. This year's bazaar created the net profit of $4,700. That was the new record! The profit will go to the EJCA general account and will be used for enrichment of EJCA activities such as subsidies for Christmas Party, New Year's party, Sukiyakiparty, Library, communication, workshops, language training, seniours, and so on. Thank you to the Bazaar planning committee and the many people who donated their time, cooking skills, baked goods and non-food items. Thank you also to the many businesses and individuals who donated items to the silent auction. Last but not least, a big thank you to the many visitors who came out to support the Bazaar. Without all of your help and effort, the Bazaar would not be so successful each year. We hope to see you all at the next Bazaar in November 2012. EJCA General Meeting on Bylaw Change Starting at 4:45 pm on January 14, 2012 15 minutes before New Year Party Earlier this year, the EJCA purchased insurance for its directors and officers. However, we need to add clauses to the Bylaws to enable the insurance to indemnify the directors and officers. This is our 30-day notice for the meeting to add the below clauses to our Bylaws. We propose that these clauses be inserted after the Borrowing Power section. We hope to see many of you at the meeting! Protection and Indemnification of Directors and Officers 1. Each Director or Officer holds office with protection from the Society. The Society indemnifies each Director or Officer against all costs or charges that result from any act done in his role for the Society. The Society does not protect any Director or Officer for acts of fraud, dishonesty, or bad faith. 2. No Director or Officer is liable for the acts of any other Director, Officer, member or employee. No Director or Officer is responsible for any loss or damage due to the bankruptcy, insolvency, or wrongful act of any person, firm or corporation dealing with the Society. No Director or Officer is liable for any loss due to an oversight or error in judgment, or by any act in his role for the society, unless the act is fraud, dishonesty or bad faith. 3. Directors or Officers can rely on the accuracy of any statement or report prepared by the Society's auditor. Explore Japan 2011 - Enjoyed by 320 High School Students! Karate workshop - John Priegert, Karyn Robinson (Gojukai) On November 1 and 2, the total of 320 Grade 10 students from nine high schools (Bellerose Composite - St. Albert, Harry Ainlay - Edmonton, Jasper Place Composite - Edmonton, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive - Red Deer, Louis St. Laurent - Edmonton, Notre Dame - Red Deer, Spruce Grove Composite - Spruce Grove, St. Thomas Aquinas - Spruce Grove, W.P. Wagner - Edmonton) joined the Explore Japan 2011 and they had very informative and fun time experiencing various forms of Japanese Culture. These students started the Japanese Language course in September. The Explore Japan is an opportunity where the students could see and experience various Japanese cultures. Japanese Dance - Keiko Frueh, Ann Cassidy, Mineko Sasano, Yuko Nakano (Wakaba-Kai) It was two full-days Japanese Culture Day organized by the EJCA Culture Programs, the Alberta Education, the Institute for Innovation in Second Language Education at the Edmonton Public School Board, and the Alberta Japanese Teacher's Association. The Consulate General of Japan in Calgary supported the program by providing funds. The University of Alberta (Prince Takamado Japan Centre) Alberta Education, and the Japan Foundation in Toronto also sponsored the event by providing a keynote speaker and gifts to schools and students. Other presenters: Keynote speech - Associate Professor Anne Commons, Japanese Language and Literature at the University of Alberta, encouraged the students to learn Japanese language and culture. Modern Japan - Eyobe Melketsadik, a third year Grant MacEwan University student who was in Japan for one year as an exchange student, told his experience in Japan using slides and video. He talked about modern Japan, technology, and life styles, particularly of young people. Planning, Communication, MC, and Guides:, Kanako Sakai, Miho Okishiro,, Takashi Ohki, Yoshimi Hirata EJCA was the major provider of the equipment such as tea ceremony sets, calligraphy equipments, Yukata/Kimono, origami, Shoji screens and some furniture. It also provided presenters for Calligraphy, Origami, Kimono, Flower Arrangement and Tea Ceremony, Taiko demo and workshop, Karate workshop, Kimono Fashion Show, and Japanese Dance. The Institute for Innovation in Second Language Education provided the facility. Six classrooms and a hall were used for the sessions. The program is unique where a Japanese community, Canadian education systems, Japanese Governmental organizations, and a university jointly coordinated a cultural event for high school students. The event was very successful as a result of dedicated efforts of members for making a detailed plan, making funds available, communicating well with the teachers/presenters, and most importantly, there were knowledgeable and experienced presenters and assistants. The EJCA Awa Odori Club invites you to join us Awa-odori is very simple to start learning, at the same time, we can continue improving the dance for many, many years to come. It is especially enjoyable because many of us practice together and dance together. In addition to this, practicing Awa-odori is a very good exercise; moving every part of our body. We also get opportunities to dance, in our bright costumes, for many different groups introducing it as one of many Japanese cultures. By doing this we expand our friends to different cultures in Edmonton. In 2011, we danced at the Heritage Festival, the Kurimoto Japanese Garden Spring festival, the Chinese Church event, the German Culture Centre, Suzuki Music School, and the Lion's Senior Centre. The next practice will be at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 11. We will show you videos of some examples. Japanese Language Class starting in January 2012 The fall session of the Japanese Language class will end on November 23, 2011. It was another successful learning opportunity. The 2012 winter session (8th of the series) will run from January 18th to March 21st, 2012. It will have two levels: beginners and intermediate. For the beginners level in this session, we will accept registrations only from students who attended EJCA Japanese language sessions previously or who have some Japanese language background. A class for no Japanese language experience students will be scheduled in the future. The closing date for applications is December 28, 2011. Applications and cheques can be sent or delivered to the EJCA office. For more details and for a registration form, please go to the EJCA Website at http://www.ejca.org/schools.html. The club members are the EJCA Seniors, 55 years and older. However, all interested persons of all ages are welcome to attend our meetings & events. Membership has reached an all-time high of 47 seniors this year (in 2010 = 35 and 2009 = 32 members were registered). Peter C. Wong was re-elected as President to serve another term for 2012 & 2013. New comers, Debby Oikawa and Martha Miller take on the positions of Secretary and Treasurer while Yumiko Hoyano rejoins the executive as Vice-President. Thank-you to out-going executives -, Heidi Matsune and Hiroshi Yokota - for their years of service to the club. Monthly meetings are held at the EJCA Center on the fourth Wednesday of every month except for December. After a short meeting, the members have a delicious bento lunch prepared by Sushi Wasabi. Seniors socialize and engage in various activities (event planning, exercises by Shinya (our resident physiotherapist), mental quizzes, card games, quilting, origami, etc...) for the afternoon. Once a month, the group plans an outing which may include a lunch or brunch (food is a very important component in all outings!). During 2010 and 2011, the seniors went for: Edmonton Queen paddleboat trip, Jubilations dinner theatre, River Cree Casino, EJCA film/movie shows & Udon noodles, Cora's brunch, Stony Plain Heritage Center, Alberta Legislature, Northlands Horse Races, Fort Edmonton Park, Matsu no Kai Club Report for 2011 Royal Alberta Museum, amongst others. In December, the Club hosts Christmas lunch at local buffet restaurants with good attendance for last two years. In May, the Club operates their only fund raiser, the Seniors Spring Lunch & Bake Sale. The funds raised support all our club activities for the year. All seniors are expected to help. In 2011, many of the seniors helped with the local Japan disaster relief bazaar and other efforts. Seniors took part in the following EJCA events in 2011: Meeting the new Japanese Ambassadorand the new Consul General. Helping with Japan Disaster Relief fund raising efforts. Various Heritage Festival activities. AGM events for EJCA and NAJC. Seniors issues & conferences (on housing, health, welfare, meals,...). Plans for 2012 & 2013? University of British Columbia Honorary Degrees As reported this fall, Mary Kitagawa of and their Human Rights Committee, initiated a campaign for UBC to award honorary degrees to those former Japanese Canadian students who were forced to leave UBC in 1942, when Japanese Canadians were forcefully removed from coastal B.C. and interned. At that time, we asked that those interested in this initiative to sign a petition which was sent to Mary. She has now informed us that UBC has decided to award honorary degrees to those students affected by the internment. The next step is to try to locate these former students or families. Please assist by providing information about those who might be eligible. The names of the Japanese Canadian students who were registered at UBC in 1942 is attached (those who have already been contacted are not listed). The last part of the list is on page 16. If you can provide information to assist the Human Rights Committee locate any of those on the list or their families, please send the information to Mary at: heiwa@telus.net. 秋のバザー報告 ルイーズ ウォン EJCA秋のバザーは1年に1回行われますが バザーのために数ヶ 月前から用意をはじめています 今年もバザーで大人気のお餅 と大福は10月中に沢山作りました また サイレント オーク ションやセール用の品物の寄付依頼 値段付け バザーのポス ターの配布 当日のボランティアのお願い 会場の設定等々 企画委員には忙しい10月でした また 幕の内弁当 寿司弁 当 かき揚げうどんなど材料の用意も10月に始まり バザー前 日の11月4日はセンターの台所で大勢のボランティアが下準備や 料理をしました バザーの当日 11月5日 土 は心配されていた雪もふらず 素 晴らしい秋の日になりました バザーは11時30分の開場です が 早番の人は7時から料理を始めました いなり寿司 おにぎ り 幕の内弁当 太巻きがどんどん出来上がり エビフライや 酢の物の用意も進みます 会場では テーブルや椅子が並べら れ ベークセールの寄付が届くと値段がつけられ サイレン ト オークションやセール用の品物が陳列されました 11時前にボランティアは豚汁とおにぎりの軽い昼食を食べて11 時30分の開場に備えました 早く会場についたお客様はセール の方の会場に入っていただきました 11時30分に食べ物の方の ホールも開けました 開場を待っていた大勢のお客様が幕の内 弁当 寿司弁当 おにぎり弁当 かき揚げうどん 大福 おも ち お汁粉 ベークセールなどの品々から あれこれとお買い 物を始めました すぐにホールと隣の部屋は食事をするお客様 でいっぱいになり 美味しい食事を味わい 家族や友達と楽し 14 November - December 2011 そうな様子の方々であふれました お茶係とうどん係りの人は 皆様にお茶をお出ししたり うどんをお届けしたり とても忙 しそうでした 食事がすむと サイレント オークションのと ころへ行く方が沢山ありました 品々を見て 自分が欲しいも のの値段をかきいれます 着物セット 日本人形 陶芸品 ぐ い飲みセット 絵 レストランの商品券 など28点が並んでい ます さらに別の部屋では 新品や中古のカナダの物や日本の 物のセールがありました どのお客様も何かしら好きなものを 見つけて買ってくださるので ここのボランティアも大忙しで した バザーは1時30分に終わりました お客様に沢山買ってい ただいて ボランティアは疲れたけれども充実した1日でした 今年のバザーでは 4,700の純益を上げることができました こ れは今までの新記録です この収益はEJCAの予算に組み込ま れ EJCA の活動のために大切に使われます クリスマスパー ティ 新年会 すき焼きパーティ 図書 通信 諸種のワーク ショップ 日本語学習 シニアー その他いろいろな活動の援 助金になります バザーの企画委員の皆様 料理やセールの用意や当日のために 沢山の時間を使って下さったボランティアの皆様本当にありが とうございました また サイレント オークションやベーク セールやそのほかの品々を寄付してくださった皆様もありがと うございました そしてバザーのためにお越しくださったお客 様の皆様へ厚くお礼を申し上げます 皆様の多大な援助のおか げさまで毎年バザーは大成功に終わっております 又来年 2012年のバザーをご一緒に行いたいと思います
