GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Subject and Verb Agreement Rules Part 1 (numbers 1-4) (5-6 minutes) ( 主語と動詞のルール 1 単数形 複数形 ]) Subject and Verb Agreement is necessary to establish a grammatically correct sentence. Here are the first four rules in Subject and Verb Agreement to avoid confusion. ( 正しい文では 主語と動詞が呼応している必要があります 主語が単数 複数かによ り 動詞を活用させる 4 つのルールを学びましょう ) 1. The verb must agree with its subject in number. The singular subject takes singular verbs while plural subject takes plural verbs. ( 主語の単数 複数に合わせ 動詞を活用させます ) Examples ( 例 ): The secretary writes the reports. (singular) 秘書は 報告書を書く ( 主語が単数 ) The members of the board meet monthly. (plural) 取締役たちには 月一回の会議がある ( 主語が複数 ) 2. The groups of words or phrases that modify the subject do not affect the form of the verb. ( 主語のすぐ後にその主語を説明する文が挿入されていても 主語の単数形 複数 形に合わせ 動詞を活用させます ) Examples: ( 例 ) The projector that I leased is broken. (singular) 借りてきたプロジェクターは 壊れている ( 主語が単数 ) The computers for this department are already delivered. (plural) この部署へのコンピューターは 既に配達してある ( 主語が複数 ) Page 3
3. The prepositional phrases do not affect the subject and verb agreement. ( 主語の後に前置詞句が挿入されていても 主語の単数形 複数形に合わせ 動詞を活用させます ) Examples: ( 例 ) The laptop on top of my table is new. (singular) 私のテーブルの上にあるノート型パソコンは新しい ( 主語が単数 ) The office workers behind his room are noisy. (plural) 彼の部屋の後ろにいる会社員たちはうるさい ( 主語が複数 ) 4. Always place the subject after the verb when the sentence is introduced by here and there. ( here もしくは there を使った文では 動詞の後に主語がきます ) Examples: There is a mistake on the report that you submitted. (singular) あなたの提出した報告書に ミスがあります ( 主語が単数 ) Here are the materials for your presentation. (plural) これが あなたのプレゼンの資料です ( 主語が複数 ) Remember: Always determine whether the subject is singular or plural to know what verb to use in a sentence. Nouns and verbs form their plurals in opposite ways. Add an s or es to the singular form of the noun to make it plural (e.g. machine machines) while remove an s or es from the singular form of the verb to make it plural (e.g. makes make). ( ポイント : 文中の動詞の形は 主語が単数か複数かによって決められます 単数の名詞に s や es をつけることによって複数形に変えられます ( 例 machine v.s. machines) 一方 単数の主語に対する動詞から s や es を取ることによって複数の主語に対する動詞に変えられます よって 名詞と動詞の単数形 複数形に変化させる活用法は間逆になります ) Comprehension Check: How does the subject agree with the verb in number? How does a verb form its plural? 動詞は 主語にどのように呼応させるのですか? 主語が複数のとき 動詞はどのような形になりますか? Page 4
