9 Capitalizing on its core technologies, NAiS addresses the Life Support market Automation Control Device Division of Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd. Life Oriented covers products and services to support lifestyles and encompasses the following four sectors: 1) housing equipment and home appliances, 2) security and disaster, 3) health care, medical care and nursing care, and 4) processing, packaging and inspection equipment used in the manufacture of food, medicines and cosmetics. NAiS addresses the client's needs by establishing so-called design-in arrangements with clients, preempting their design needs one to three years ahead of the start of actual operations. The key to such collaboration is to disclose NAiS cutting-edge technology to the client at an early stage of development and in turn to access the client's near- and mid-term plans. A range of top-class controlling devices and components are available for manufacturing systems. These include relays, switches, breakers, magnets, sensors, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), as well as laser markers, inkjet printers and inspection instruments. Matsushita Electric Works Launches Sales of New AX30 Color Image Checker In addition to the conventional monochrome type Image Checker, the AX30 Color Image Checker has the capability to process images from a color CCD camera. Color image processing ability makes possible to provide the solution to the new application like as inspection of packages of food and medicine, package identification, and sorting and inspecting electric components and so on. The system processes images by extracting up to 8 colors per camera in real time (1/30 sec). Capable of processing images from up to 2 cameras, the system can detect whether areas of each extracted color exist, as well as their dimensions, location, and how many are present. While processing speed depends on the procedures of inspection being conducted, the system has processed up to 1,200 items/min (20 items/sec) in a certain applications. Compact flash memory (512 Mbyte max) and an Ethernet interface are also available, offering data back up, import and export capabilities. Matsushita Electric Works has already launched machine vision system using monochrome CCD camera, processing gray scale images. The new Image Checker was developed in response to increasing need for color image processors, especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries. They leveraged its strength in conventional compact image processing device to develop a new compact color camera and a controller with built-in color extraction capabilities. The color extractor uses a unique color recognition method, which processes colors more like human eyes. This new Color Image Checker AX30 has also been streamlined for better visibility and ease of use, The standard configuration includes two cameras, an Ethernet interface, RS232C x 2 channels, compact flash memory, dedicated keypad (operation input), VGA display interface, and parallel I/O. These variety of I/O configurations allow for flexible system structure. 9

12 Packaging technology addresses social and environmental changes Much is involved when packaging a product. Packaging issues to be addressed have to include networking, globalization, increased longevity, security and safety, and ecology. We interviewed Mr. Yoichi Ogiwara, a product development manager at TAQ s Integrated Packaging Development Center at Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. This company is an industry leader with significant share in the Japanese packaging market. As Mr. Ogiwara puts it: We live in an age of plummeting birthrate and increased longevity. Let me take a cake carton for example. Pointed corners that could hurt people should be eliminated, and what people want are an easy-to-open feature and user-friendly instructions. He goes on to say, For the handicapped, special design considerations including the use of Braille are a must. In a broader sense we are striving toward a Universal Design concept to supply packages designed for everybody s comfort. Attention toward the lifestyle differences between young and old is also important and, needless to say, it is essential to comply with safety and security standards such as HACCP for food processing and packaging, as well. 12
