29 Max Horkheimer and Anti-Semitism The Frankfurter School led by Max Horkheimer was the most remarkable "Jewish sect" that German Jewry produced. However the discussion of the Judaic elements in the Frankfurter School thought was accorded relatively little attention in the critical literature on the School. Max Horkheimer wrote two novels in his youth. In these novels he expresses the eternal longing of the Jew for justice and the movement of anti-semitism. In " Juden und Europa" he emphasizes that the circulation sphere where the Jew have worked successfully was deprived by the planned economy of the bureaucracy. Therefore he asserts that the Jew becomes the object of expulsion, the Holocaust. Horkheimer thinks that, in order to develop a program against anti-semitism, we must not only appeal to " the conscious mind( der bewußte Geist)" such as a democratic ideal, feeling of justice and enlightenment to fairness, but also we should take into consideration of the unconscious mind. Anti- Semitism comes from a fundamental phenomenon on the deepest level of a destructive nature. It is the secret hatred for civilization. Horkheimer has an ambivalent attitude towards Israel. Israel gives asylum to many Jewish people, but he has to ask whether Israel is the Zion of the Bible because the Bible states that the Messiah will lead the righteous people of all nations to the land of Zion. It remains questionable that the existence of Israel is the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament. In the case of Jewish people the confession of faith to the God and Nation brought the persecution and the death. The Jew stands in front of the alternative, denying God or building up a nation-state, to escape from the persecution and the death. But this alternative means the ruin of Judaism for Horkheimer.
