2 Utility of the Hold Band Used for Cryotherapy in Post-shoulder Arthroscopy Rinko Uchida Mariko Okumura Manami Fujiura Yasuyuki Ishida Etsuo Chosa Abstract Thisstudy aims to analyze and verify the utility of Icing system hold bands which were invented for use in the practice of Cryotherapy A survey was conducted to evaluate the perspective of both nurse and patient regarding hold bands In particular the utility of wearing the hold band was measured based on responses from patients who had undergone shoulder arthroscopy The cooling effects of the affected area was compared by comparing skin temperature with that of unaffected areas It was concluded that the use of the hold band is more effective in maintaining localized cooling skin temperatures during Cryotherapy Furthermore because it is easy to apply and remove it is also easy toobserve or monitor Therefore our study suggests that the hold band helps to reduce patient suffering resulting from pressure caused by traditional methods This allows for the cooling of the affected area without the added complication of inhibiting peripheral circulation orthopedic nursing Cryotherapy shoulder joint arthroscopic surgery School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki Hospital Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedic surgery

12 The Meaning of Attending an Outpatient Clinic for Young People with Childhood-Onset Chronic Illness Riyako Maruta Chikaho Nomaguchi Hifumi Kusaba Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of attending an outpatient clinic for young patients with childhood-onset chronic illness. Subjects comprised patients (age range, - years) with chronic illness who were attending a pediatric outpatient clinic. They were asked to participate in semi-structured interviews. The data were then analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Based on the results of the qualitative analysis, the following five categories were identified: ) being myself as a patient with an illness; ) assessing my physical condition; ) seeking information about the possible effects of my disease on major life events; ) steadying my nerves; and ) viewing my illness as a part of everyday life. Inter-category relationships were then clarified. For young adult patients with chronic diseases diagnosed in childhood, regular visits to the pediatric outpatient department signified a continuation of treatment behavior and appropriate support for engaging in life events. These findings indicate the need for ageappropriate, trust-based support for treatment behavior that provides a sense of security during the transition from child- to adulthood and enables patients to fully engage in life events. 22 A Study on Meanings of Reflection in New Nurses Influenced Their Professional Development Mihoko Nakamura Satoe Higashi Noriko Tsuda Abstract The purpose of this study was to clarify the meanings in which the implementation of reflection in new nurses influences their development to theexpert level. For study methods,we perfomed five rounds feedback interviews with seven new nurses based on Reflective Journal,collected data on the effectiveness of the interviews through a semi-structured interview,and then conduced a content analysis using a qualitative and inductive method. As a result of content analysis,nine meanings were obtained.the structures were as follows One s spiritual self-awareness was the core category and led to learing of the practice for creative nursing. In the course of this, conquering uncomfortable feeling,improvement of critical thinking ability,acquisition of self-empowerment ability, and acquisition of self-development ability also emerged,followed by behavioral change and change of mental framework as nurses in the new nurses themselves.finally, habit of reflective thinking had an effect on the whole process and supported the development of new nurses.it was clarified that reflection in this study was meaning for the development of new nurses into experts.it was suggested that reflection was a effective method of the educational support for new nurses.
