4 Sika Adapts its Organization for Further Growth! This year, Sika Group experienced two major events. First, Mr. Jan Jenisch, who had served as Chairman of Sika Japan, a non-regular Director of Dyflex, Head of Region Asia Pacific until last year, was elected as the new CEO of Sika group last January. Also, last April, Dr. Paul Hälg was elected as the new Chairman of Sika. Both selections are symbolic as the first step for the next-generation of business development in Sika. Second, the previous four business unit framework of Concrete/Contractors/Distribution/Industry will be reorganized next year to seven Target Market Concrete/Waterproofing/Sealing and Bonding/Roofing/Flooring/Refurbishment/Industry. The purposes of such reframing are twofold: these business development units, through being subdivided, enable Sika people with specialized expertise and experience to provide specific, in-depth service to respective lines of customers, and to develop innovative products and workmanship specific to each Target Market. By 2006, the two-department framework of Construction and Industry in Sika Group had grown to earn yearly sales of 3.8 billion CHF. Six years ago, the two departments were changed to the current four business units and further grew to earn 4.6 billion CHF in Likewise, Sika intends to increase the sales to 700 billion and even 800 billion through the seven Target Market frameworks. Also, in order to ensure quicker and more efficient business management, the number of executive management at our Switzerland Head Office has been decreased to nine from the previous fourteen. In addition, the regional groups have become fewer, from the previous six to the current four, with each regional group having the capacity to manage supply chain, including operation. All of these changes in organization and business development structure are intended to further strengthen the globalization of Sika. President, Sika Japan KOICHI OBA 3 Customer Magazine EVOLUTION
5 Sika to Keep Focusing on the Customers. On a personal note, I will resign this year from my post as a representative director of Sika Japan and Dyflex and will assume, next January, the role of Head of Target Market Roofing at the Switzerland Head Office. I appreciate everyone s cooperation over these last five years at Sika and two and a half-year at Dyflex. Sika has pursued a customerfocus since its foundation. Customerfocus is, as the name implies, to give higher value to contact with the customers, understand their needs in the market and develop innovative technological solutions. Though my efforts will be from Switzerland next year and thereafter, I will not spare any effort to support the customers in Japan by keeping the customerfocus spirit in my mind. Much remains to be still improved at Sika Japan. Also in future, your suggestions and constructive criticism will be appreciated. 10 What has Supported Sika, is Globalization. The current issue of EVOLUTION features Globalization. This year, Sika celebrates the 102 years anniversary of its foundation, becomes a real worldwide operator in having bases in more than 70 countries and has working employees of about 15,300. Our worldwide operations are regrettably not well known in Japan. Accordingly, let us introduce Sika s globalization from a variety of angles. First, the comments of five colleagues working for Sika Japan and another subsidiary are introduced in the hope of sharing a feeling of globalization with you. Barbara Jucker Head of Technology Center There are only little differences between Switzerland and Japan in the mindset for R&D. When entering Sika Japan, I felt that the atmosphere in the R&D labs is rather similar at Japan and Switzerland. Though I feel the same impression when I visit any overseas Sika offices, all colleagues there are very open and helpful. This attitude is a very important part of Sika culture.also, I make it a rule to keep in close contact with people in charge of business development, since I try to tackle my tasks to develop better products than others by turning their vivid business information to advantage. In Sika, there are invisible links among people beyond the country or region. Polyols are used in around 20 Sika countries all over the world and involves an extensive supplier network globally. Hence, my job requires understanding of the different markets and successful collaboration with various cultures. Personal contact is vital. What I have usually been impressed by in any Sika subsidiary worldwide, is that people talk in a frank way, in disregard of their status of senior or a subordinate, and there is a cheerful atmosphere in which everyone has a chance to disclose his opinion and is also willing to share his valuable knowledge. Indeed, this Sika Spirit is very well lived here at Sika Japan. The Sika world will keep me always challenged and busy and my goal is to continuously learn more from the Sika business and products, while enjoying daily life in Japan. As my customers are all domestic companies in Japan, I have not had any chance to visit any overseas Sika subsidiaries. When I am engaged in the improvement of a product according to customer requests, I keep in frequent contact with responsible person at Switzerland head office. They are kind enough to support us by supplying various information and product data from their group, always paying high respect to Japanese modes of business operation. On such occasions, I always recall that Sika is doing real glocal operations (in both senses of globalization and localization). Tomohisa Kurata Business Development Manager, Sika (Thailand) Ltd. It is a real advantage to share worldwide information on the products. For instance, when I take part in an assembly of the Asia Pacific Region, it is not uncommon for the attendants to offer solutions by way of their own example to a difficulty raised by another attendant on the products of Sika, as all attendants deal with same products. On such an occasion, I keenly feel the real globalization of Sika, as well as the strong advantage of the Sika group in that Sika offices in respective countries openly share any experiences by freely discussing solutions. Katsuhiko Goto Global Key Account Manager I really feel the globalization of Sika when visiting overseas construction sites. I vividly felt the globalization of Sika for the first time when I visited a construction site in Algeria where major Japan general contractors were engaged in roadway construction for length of 400 km. All the pertinent products used there were from Sika. All the Sika people gathered from overseas offices were working together. Looking at the scene, I strongly realized that Sika is working as a worldwide group of companies beyond any national boundary. Customer Magazine EVOLUTION 10
12 Sika s Globalization Leading to Future Opportunities. Though many companies hoist the flag of globalization, few foreign company have succeeded in globalization through activities in Japan. In the retail field, 7-Eleven and McDonald have succeeded in their business operations by adapting the operation mode to Japanese style. As far as manufacturers of production materials such as us are concerned, there is no other company, to my knowledge, that has hold a big domestic share in real globalization. Among such manufacturers, Sika has succeeded in Japan because it keeps a flexible posture to respect the local way of thinking in a positive way. The largest reason that Sika has been associated with Dyflex is that Sika has unique technologies that Dyflex lacked, in addition to paying much respect to the local way of thinking. By new technologies being introduced through Sika, it was hoped that products would be developed that would enable new opportunities for the future. With this, it is expected that Dyflex will see a bright future. Also, Dyflex anticipates that it will be able to learn, through Sika, market information from abroad more quickly and practically than it would otherwise. 13 An Innovative Waterproofing Product Born of Synergy through Association with Sika. One-component PU LAM waterproofing is one of the technologies we did not have, but Sika had. Currently, two-component PU LAM type products predominate in the waterproofing product market. They consist of a base resin component and hardener, which are proportionately mixed for application. In reality, the one-component type is superior to the two-component type in ease of use and workability; however, the former s higher costs prevented it from becoming prevalent. From about 15 years ago, we have fixed our eyes on this one-component PU LAM, thinking that it would become prevalent among PU LAM waterproofing products without fail when the cost was reduced to a certain level, and we have been engaged in R&D on a trial-and-error basis. The cooperation with Sika opened the door to achieve a satisfactory level and enabled, this year, the commercial production of one-component PU LAM. With the support of Sika, we built the plant and started production in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Starting on November 1st of this year, we began to offer it for sale on the market under the name Evercoat Zero-1. This product has realized a price level that cannot be imitated by other companies, through Sika s innovative raw-material acquisition network, while achieving superlative quality. Of course, Evercoat Zero-1 may be offered overseas as well as in Japan. It is hoped that this first product materialized together with Sika will open the door to globalization for Dyflex. 14 Restaurant Houtou Fudo Located on the Skirt of Mt. Fuji The Houtou Fudo is a restaurant specializing in local dishes, located in Fuji-Kawaguchiko, in Yamanashi Prefecture. It is housed in uniquely designed architectural skins as if a cloud above Mt. Fuji softly had landed. The skins were coated with Dyflex s Quick Spray Technique for ultra-quick-hardening urethane waterproofing. This coat can be finger-touched about 20 seconds after spraying and hardens in about three minutes through the benefit of ultra-quick-hardening property, so that the waterproofing layer can be applied in a uniform thickness on perpendicular, sloped and complex surfaces. This exemplifies Sika s rooftop waterproofing technology as part of Sika s innovative solutions for evolving building construction. 13 Customer Magazine EVOLUTION

16 Sydney Harbour Bridge Waterproofing and Restoration Replacement of Floor Slab Waterproofing for Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Sydney Harbour Bridge underwent its first drastic alteration since its inauguration. The alteration work comprised the re-pavement of the roadway and replacement of floor slab waterproofing, originally completed 80 years ago. To reduce traffic congestion during closure of the bridge, the pavement construction and waterproofing system demanded immediate hardening as well as various mechanical tests, such as adhesiveness, tensile and bending strength. Sika s Sikalastic, a floor slab waterproofing system, was selected. The unique advanced waterproofing technology and know-how of Sika succeeded in clearing rigorous laboratory tests and trial replacement. 15 Customer Magazine EVOLUTION

18 Nanjing Metro Project The Nanjin metro consists of 17 routes, totaling 617 km in length. Toward the scheduled completion in 2030, the project has to progress with segment construction at a rate of 30 km a day, presenting the difficult challenge of producing 500 concrete tunnel segments a day. To cope with such a demanding schedule of concrete production, Sika ViscoCrete -20 HE, superplasticizer, was selected. On this project, as in others, Sika s admixture technology has gained a high appraisal by virtue of its noticeable improvement in production efficiency through considerable strength assured at an early stage of concrete casting, shortened concrete placement time and shortened rotation of formwork replacement. 17 Customer Magazine EVOLUTION

20 Floodwall Project at Rojana Industrial Estate Thailand Concrete Waterproofing Roofing Flooring Sealing & Bonding Refurbishment Industry To protect the industrial firms from inundation, floodwall was built with a total length of 78 km. The wall consisted of sheet pile panels which were demanded by the project owner to be sealed with high-efficiency adhesive meeting the owner s requirements. For this purpose, Sikaflex Construction AP, a sealing product, was selected. In addition to its supreme properties, large added value found in on-site training and field adhesion tests were highly appraised, excelling competitors. 19 Customer Magazine EVOLUTION
21 Keangnam Tower Vietnam Concrete Waterproofing Roofing Flooring Sealing & Bonding Refurbishment Industry The Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower was built on Pham Hung Street at the heart of Hanoi, 22.5 km from Noi Bai International Airport. The tower actually twin towers has a site area of 46,000m 2 with the highest point at 336 m from ground. 24 SIKA EXPERIENCE Once the Experience Japan was accomplished we will have had 40 students from 25 countries all over the world engaged in 12 different Sika Experiences. On most of the Sika Experience Trips the students got the chance to visit not only laboratories, trial sites and job sites, often the trips brought them to other cities and even other countries. E.g. during the Sika Experience Trip Fascination Glass the 4 winners even visited jobsites and factories in Germany, France, Austria and Italy besides Switzerland. Furthermore: there are many, many students from around the world in local internships. They write in blogposts how it is like to work for Sika. They write about their experiences & adventures, how an internship helps them to understand some topics better, how our Sika culture is like, what impresses them most. 25 YES : Youth Encounter on Sustainability YES sustains an active Alumni Network with over 1200 young talents, which have been trained since 2000 in 35 courses worldwide. Sika supporting YES, In March 2012 the latest course has been held in Japan at the Hosei University including a visit to Hiratsuka Sika facility by 50 young talents from all corners of the world. A workshop sessions at the course was asking the participants to develop projects/ ideas which for Sika are the most promising to be followed. The ideas of the young people are being evaluated actually. 26 New Tokyo Office - Sika Japan is back in Tokyo It has been sixteen years since we closed down Tokyo office and relocated Sika Japan headquarter to Hiratsuka. To improve efficiency of sales activities and strengthen relationship with customers and business partners, we established new Tokyo office effective February 20th. The new Tokyo office is located in Shinagawa, a south part of Tokyo. Shinagawa is well served by public transportation including Shinkansen (bullet train) and airport express trains from/to Narita and Haneda airport. To make the new office function as a show room, we used Sika products as much as possible for interior work including Sika ComfortFloor, Wood Floor Bonding, Sikaflex construction sealants as well as interior low-voc paint of Kowa (a subsidiary of Dyflex). The new Tokyo Office is viewed by many customers as another token of Sika s commitment to growth in Japan. Taking the advantage of its prime location, we are pledged to improve service to our customers.
