22 - June Logic of Nationalization in Croatia: Political Movements in Croatian Spring and Disintegration Process of Yugoslavia This article analyses the logic of nationalization as a tool of legitimization for nationalcentric policies which were implemented by the Croatian government after independence. The logic of proceeding with a nationalization process was derived from the political situation that preceded independence of the state. The mass movement of the Croatian spring in the 1970s was provoked by reformist leaders in the Croatian Communist Union and intellectuals belonging to Matica Hrvatska, a cultural institution for preserving Croatian culture. Their purposes were different as the Communist leaders were trying to construct a decentralized system in Yugoslavia while the intellectuals were concerned about the loss of the Croatian nation s cultural tradition. They formed a cooperative relationship in 1971 and raised a big mass movement with university students. However, the movement was suppressed after a student strike which demonstrated against the communist system. The year of 1990 was the turning point for Yugoslavia and Croatia. As the way of transition to a multi-party system, some important parties were formed. The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was led by former intellectuals and the National Coalition Agreement (KNS) was led by former reformist Communist leaders. They held almost the same purposes as in the times of the Croatian spring, but the logic of their justification was changed from achievement of selfmanagement to participation in European integration. An election was held in April to May, and the HDZ achieved a landslide victory. After the election, the Croatian government was led by the HDZ, and its policies reflected the purpose of the former intellectuals movement. Hence, the logic of nationalization was to create a political system based on the regeneration of the Croatian nation for preservation and development of its own culture, which was legitimized by rejection of self-management socialism and affirmation of return to Western Europe.
