30 John Searle Last year when we hosted the APAC International Schools Tennis Tournament it was apparent that some SIS families had many questions about the sports system we run at school. It is quite different from a typical Japanese school and therefore the purpose of this short series of articles is to explain the fundamental ideas about our school's sports. If you have any further questions we would of course be happy to hear from you. * Maybe the most important difference is that we run a season system instead of a year round club system. There are four seasons in our school year. From September to mid October we have our Fall season. This season concentrates on Tennis and Volleyball for girls and boys. Next Fall we will also have Boys High School Baseball before it changes to become a Spring sport. The Winter season goes from mid October to mid January and we offer Boys and girls Basketball at this time and MS Girls soccer. The Spring season is divided into two: Spring I which is the soccer season and goes from mid January until the Spring break and Spring II from the April holiday until the end of May and includes Badminton, Table Tennis, Softball and MS Boys Volleyball. The main reason for having season sports is to allow students to try different activities throughout the year. A student may therefore be able to be in the school Musical in the Fall, play basketball in the Winter and Soccer in the Spring. * Sports teams do not practice every night nor do they practice throughout the holidays. High school teams practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, and Middle School teams practice on Tuesday and Thursday. The practices start at 3.45 and end at Again this allows students the time to keep up with their studies and also to be involved in other things throughout the season. We have had students who have been on Student Council and been on the Varsity soccer team for example. * Each High School team season will usually finish with a tournament against other international schools. Our school belongs to the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) which includes: Brent International School Manila, Seoul Foreign School, Shanghai American School, International school of Beijing and Canadian Academy in Kobe. The High School teams of Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer and Tennis play in the APAC tournaments each season. We will host the 2005 Girls' Soccer tournament next school year. We may travel also to various parts of Japan to play the international schools there. We often play Japanese schools in practice games but are not at moment in any Japanese school tournaments. Simon Parker Welcome back - I hope you all had a great holiday! We are entering a very busy time on the sports front and we would like to see as many of you as possible get involved in the extra curricular athletic programme. We are very proud this trimester to be hosting the APAC Invitational Baseball Tournament in October. This has been made possible with the co-operation of Minoh City Council who have agreed to lend us a ground for the 3 day event - many thanks to them and to Osako sensei for his work on the negotiations. As well as Baseball with Sagara sensei we will also be sending teams to Shanghai for the Boys and Girls Volleyball tournament and to Beijing for the Tennis. As many of you know volleyball practice has already started in mid-august and it was great to see so many of you in the gym working hard. The girls team is again being coached by Hirai sensei and Mori sensei and the boys by myself and Mr. Driskill. The tennis team this year is being coached by Nakao sensei and Mr Entwistle. So if you have not yet signed up but want to play, then see one of those teachers as soon as possible. Remember practice for Varsity and Junior Varsity is Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:45pm-5:45pm. As well as APAC of course, we will be running the usual full fixtures programme for all activities on the weekends with local Japanese schools and international schools. This trimester sees a choice of 3 activities for MS students: Baseball with Mr Spurgeon Tennis with Mr Avery Girls Volleyball with Ms. Holloway Remember that practices run from 3:45pm-5:45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and games and tournaments will be on Saturdays. Sign ups and first practices are yet to be decided so listen carefully in assembly or morning homeroom for information. I would just like to take this opportunity early on, to thank the coaches for all the time they are investing to make sure that our students get a first class sports programme here at OIS/SIS. As the weeks go by I will keep you all posted with results and important dates. Lets hope for another successful year for Saber Sports - Go Sabers!! 30

33 During my childhood I lived in several small communities in Saskatchewan, Canada. After completing my Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Regina, I quickly decided to escape the cold -30 degree winters. I came to Japan for the first time in September of After three and a half years in Japan (two of them at an international school), I returned to Canada with my wife, Yoshimi. We lived in Vancouver for 5 years, during that time I taught in both an international and a private school. My personal athletic background is in ice hockey, track & field, personal training and badminton. I have coached and enjoy all forms of recreational activities, including: basketball, soccer, softball, swimming, camping/hiking, etc. I look forward to meeting you all, hopefully on the field or in the gym for a fun competitive match. Because I wanted to try something new I hadn`t done before I just "jumped in to the cold water" as we say in Germany and came to Japan about 4 years ago. And guess what! I am still here! So I guess I like it. Now this year I was given the chance to work at Senri International School: so. So if you see a bald guy with glases runnig down the school corridors with tons of books and a big radio cassette player under his arms it might be me and we might have the chance for a little chat!
