Unitec, Auckland, New Zealand 2010 cohort 5 men 2 women Medical, Pharmacy students Lesley Riley: Chaperone Report (diary style memory of visit) Before leaving Japan 5 Classroom Orientations in preparation for the trip covering activities to help students be conversant with what to expect for travel, home stay and the language classroom. (Students identified the most helpful tasks as planning what to pack, deciding on appropriate gifts to take, filling in travel documents in English using the Internet to find maps of NZ, Japan and where their home stay was located, preparing questions for their home stay family and language classroom and the introduction of language learning strategies. Domestic Travel This was a lengthy journey with 3 train changes between Toyama and Tokyo, and one bus trip from Narita before arriving at Narita View Hotel. Time spent at Narita View Hotel At the hotel, we had a group dinner allowing time for students to relax, talk about the program and ask questions. There was also a chance to rehearse their power point presentations during a block of time the next morning. This was valuable as it gave much needed practice time. Students chose very interesting topics - which had cultural appeal for their new classmate audience in NZ. After taking the bus to Narita Terminal 2, we met some parents and family members who took videos and photos. We had time for lunch, and time to explore NRT Airport before immigration. When checking in, students learned the importance of luggage weight restrictions and new immigration laws and bag checks. International Travel on airplane We sat in one line across the plane. Students had their first taste of NZ food; very good service. Air NZ has individual TV screens with a variety of programs in English, such as movies, games, news, our flight path, times etc. It was the first chance to speak to flight attendants in English. In transit, in Christchurch, students had a chance to change currency and have a brief look at shops. The view of the nearby mountain ranges was spectacular. Arrivals Customs are strict in NZ. We had practiced filling in the detailed Customs Declaration form. Bags are X-rayed on entry and each student was interviewed. Again, our practice in English for these conversations, were helpful. On arrival in Auckland, we were greeted by Mr. Schacleford, Tina, the Home Stay coordinator and bus 33

36 driver who then delivered students safely to their respective home stay families. Unitec Campus First experiences on Unitec campus the next morning consisted of an interesting tour in brilliant sunshine. We were shown the library, computer lab, cafeteria, classrooms, sports grounds, different faculty buildings, the student office, and saw from a distance, the newly built designer Maori Marae (meeting House) about to be opened. Students were later given a placement test to determine which level they should begin studies. We also met that week for shared lunches and checked that home stay experiences were progressing accordingly. Students were happy to try many new experiences immediately. One or two made new friends from other countries straight away and were happy to be a part of a large student body with international students. Their study and activities both on and off campus continued for the next 3 weeks and in the last week they participated in practical visits to venues connected to medical and health, thus allowing a New Zealand perspective related to their majors. These visits included: Yoga and Ayurvedic Medicine, the Wellpark College of Natural Therapies, New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine, South Pacific College of Natural Therapies and Douglas Pharmaceuticals. Returning to Japan Students had become closely attached to their home stay families and new friends. All of them bought NZ souvenirs and they were relaxed and happy. Some were reluctant to leave. The trip back was straightforward and it was noticeable how much more confident students were with all aspects of living in a foreign country and communicating in English. On return to Japan, students were encouraged to reflect on their whole experience and go through a checklist of what they felt they were able to achieve using English. Many also kept in touch with their new friends and home stay families. Most agreed that 4 weeks was too short and that just as they were feeling they could master more linguistic skills, the program came to an end. Perhaps their experiences showed how a study abroad experience at the very least can alter their lives culturally, linguistically, socially, and emotionally. They had multiple chances to use English, make new friends, and set them on positive curses in the future careers. 34
