6 Dr. Joseph Arden Kyorin University Entrance Ceremony Address Thank you, Kyorin University, for inviting me today. My university, the University of Maryland University College, and Kyorin University have had a mutually supportive relationship for more than 40 years. So, Thank you, Dr. Matsuda, for inviting me to be with you today. I am honored. come today to speak to you the entering class of Kyorin University. am not, however, quite sure of my role, of my purpose. When Dr. Matsuda invited me to address you today a group of young Japanese students entering a Japanese University I wondered what I a much older Americancould possibly say to you that would be meaningful. That would in any way be relevant to you and your world. I am not at all sure that I can, but please allow me to try. I begin with a quote from a story entitled Oh, the places you will go named Dr. Seuss: by an American author CONGRATULATIONS! TODAY IS YOUR DAY. YOU ARE OFF TO GREAT PLACES! YOU ARE OFF AND AWAY! YOU HAVE BRAINS IN YOUR HEAD. YOU HAVE FEET IN YOUR SHOES. YOU CAN STEER YOURSELF ANY DIRECTION YOU CHOOSE. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. AND YOU KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW. AND, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO WILL DECIDE WHERE TO GO. Yes, that is the case. You each of youwill decide where you go and how you get there. You have a lot of pressure. Why do I say this? Because unlike your parents and grandparents, you will live in an international, interracial, and interreligious global society, one that will demand of you as individual citizens and potential national leaders more sensitivity, more subtlety, and a greater capacity for understanding that has been required of any other young generation in the history of the

7 world. The world you are about to enter as adults is very different from the world that Dr. Matsuda and the other senior staff and faculty of Kyorin Universityand myself entered years ago. The big difference is that you do not have the same clear rules that we had, whether in Japan or the United States or whatever Country. You do not always even have general guidelines. You do not have a defined path to follow. Your road is much more obscure, and less clear, than for my generation. Change, change, change. All about. Whether here in Japan or in western Europe or north America. Think of the Japan of And compare it to the Japan of 1982 or 1972 or Whose world was more certain, more secure? You know the answer certainly not Your world. These next few years at Kyorin will be precious ones for you. Shortly after you leave, you will realize that in many ways they were the best of your life. Take advantage of the opportunities to know and learn from the Kyorin faculty. They are enthusiastic and accomplished teachers. From your Kyorin faculty, try to find someone who will motivate you to be scholarly, to acquire knowledge, and perhaps to attain wisdom. Take from your Kyorin faculty and, in turn, give as much as you are able. Use your time at Kyorin to gain a meaningful appreciation of the world around you. Try to be open to change. Recognize and embrace the possibility that your time at Kyorin may alter the way you see yourself and your world. Thus far, I have been quite serious. And, I doubt that you will remember much, if anything, of what I have said. Now I want to offer some very practical, perhaps humorous, advice: Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proven by scientists, where as the rest of my advice has not. Still, I will offer it to you. 1. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded, but try. 2. Try not to worry about the future. You can t control it. And real trouble almost always comes without warning. 3. Do one thing every day that scares you. 4. Don t be reckless with other people s hearts. Don t put up with people who are reckless with yours. 5. Don t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you are ahead, sometimes you are behind. The race is long, and, in the end it s only with yourself. 6. Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, please tell me how. 7. Keep your old love letters and love messages. Throw away your old bank statements. 8. Sing. 9. Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. 10. Read the directions even if you don t follow them. 11. Get to know your parents. You never know when they ll be gone. Be nice to your brothers and sisters.they re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the

8 future. 12. Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young. Finally, trust me on the sunscreen I close with an Irish blessing: MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU, MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK,MAY THE SUN SHINE WARM UPON YOUR FACE, AND THE RAINS FALL GENTLY IN YOUR FIELDS, AND UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND.
