65 ハワイ王国における政党政治の出現と展開の党にも白人と先住民が入り交じりまた入れ替わり投票者には誰がどの党の立候補か定か 20 でなかった９月12日の選挙では宣教師子孫が率いる改革党が勝利した図１参照図１ハワイ王国における政党の出現と分裂 1883年 1892年 1888年11月22日改革党の寡頭政治に対抗して本来の立憲君主制に戻すため先住民は政治協会 Hui Kālai āina を設立した翌年５月24日に会長ジョンブッシュ John Ailuene Bush は先住民を啓蒙して仲間の声を取り上げるため新しくハワイ語新聞真実を発行した彼らの主張は立憲君主制維持銃剣憲法反対参政権資格是正等であった 1890年１月６日に彼らは強力な組織を目指して職人労働者政治保護組合 Mechanics and Workingmen s Political Protective Union, 以下労働組合と略記と連合した労働組合は 1889年９月に設立され投票資格廃止王国独立維持アジア移民制限を掲げていた設立２ヶ月後の組合員は約600人で白人と多数の先住民もいた政治協会と労働組合の連合は1890年選挙に向けて王国独立アジア移民反対投票資格廃止を目的に国民改革党 National Reform Party を結成した21 国民改革党の先住民は労働組合との連合で一つの選択を余儀なくされていた先住民女性の国際結婚は白人だけでなく中国系実業家とのそれも珍しくなかった先住民のビジネス界では中国人は重要な顧客であり彼らの参政権剥奪に関心を寄せるのは当然だったしかし白人労働者は中国文化を劣性と見做し低賃金労働を厭わない中国人を不公平な競争相手として彼らの権利縮小を要求した特にポルトガル人は中国人排斥を強く主張した先住民が白人労働者と連合するならば彼らの考えに幾分妥協することが必要でありまた旧体制を復活することは現実的ではなかった先住民は独立王国を維持できるか奴隷同然のプランテーション 63
