1 p September2002 A Combination of Sign Language Poetry and Noh Drama Akogi TANADA Shigeru In the linguistic art of the Japanese tradition, there are haiku, tanka, and other poetic art forms, as well as the more general art form of noh. The haiku, tanka, and other poetic forms were indeed expressed only by verbal language, but noh is an art that introduced the element of drama in addition to the verbal language, pulling together both auditory and visual enjoyment. The author found similarities between sign poems and the noh drama Akogi. Sign poetry not only expresses the words of the poem, it also contains a visual element. Perhaps the verse of sign poetry is equivalent to the changing of noh music, whereas the poem as a whole would relate to noh s dramatic aspect
