One articulated shell of unknown species of Meretrix from a lagoon near Karachi was observed at the U. S. National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. More recently C. Martin collected a number of shells of the same species from archeological sites of Oman (4500 to 2000 BC). At the archeological sites, the Meretrix sp. was characteristically associated with mollusks of a lagoon, including Amiantis umbonella and Marcia opima. The followings are description of the Meretrix n. sp.: Shell antero-posteriorly elongate subtrigonal, thick, inequilateral, equivalve. Beak prosogyrous, moderately high, placed slightly anterior to midpoint of dorsal margin. Anterior margin more or less narrowly rounded; ventral margin widely rounded; posterior margin narrow, bluntly pointed; postero-dorsal margin long, more or less straight. Lunule weakly defined; no small pit at the commissure plane below lunule. Escutcheon very weakly defined. Outer surface smooth, without irregularly spaced growth striae at anterior area just behind lunule. Outer coloration white, glossy; inner coloration white, occasionally tinged with dark purple posteriorly. Hinge plate short, thick, arched, with weak AI, AIII, and three cardinal teeth in the right valve; strong AII, three cardinal teeth in the left valve. Pallial line more or less distinct, far from ventral margin. Pallial sinus extremely shallow, without heel. Anterior adductor muscle scar oval, smaller than oval posterior adductor muscle scar. This Meretrix sp. differs from Meretrix casta var. ovum (Hanley) illustrated by Hornell (1917, pl. 5, f. 24-26; pl. 6, f. 35-38) by possession of longer posterior half and very shallow sinuation just before postero-ventral corner.

Detecting the pattern and process of hybridization between species provides opportunities to understand the evolutionary processes of reproductive isolation. Through simultaneous reciprocal copulation between Bradybaena pellucida (BP) and B. similaris (BS), only BP produces fertile hybrids while BS lays no eggs. Thus, introgression of mtdna from BP to BS would be more likely than from BS to BP. However, we detected the BS haplotype of mtdna in many allopatric and sympatric populations of BP in the southern Boso peninsula. It suggests that mtdna leaks from BS to BP through backcross F 2 hybrids. We confirmed that BS produces F 2 hybrids by backcrossing with F 1 hybrids. In the field, BP has replaced BS within a few years after BP was first recorded in BS-dominating places. It suggest that F 2 hybrids carrying the BS haplotype likely mates with rapidly increasing BP instead of BS. Thus, population dynamics observed in the wild are consistent with the pattern of mtdna introgression detected. BPBSBP BS DNA BP BS F 1 BS F BS F BS DNA BP BP BS
