Towards the Revival of Associationalism: Critical Analysis of Hirst s Interpretation of G.D.H. Cole s Social Theory Shioto FUKUCHI : The purpose of this paper is to critique P. Q. Hirst s interpretation of English classical associationalist G. D. H. Cole s social theory. Hirst claims that Cole s normative assumptions about associations are unwarranted and unjustified. However, Hirst views associations as service providers in his associational alternative governance model. On this point, we can say that Hirst and Cole share a similar view of associations, because Cole also emphasizes the importance of service-providing associations, which he calls administrative associations. We think such a view of associations is incorrect. Ignoring this incorrect view will hinder the real revival of associationalism. : Associative democracy, P. Q.
