Relation between Christianity and Sericultural Industry of the Meiji Era in Gunma Prefecture, Fujioka District: Mainly the Midono Church and the Takayamasya Sericulture School Motoyuki OGINO School of Social Welfare, Tokyo University of Social Welfare (Isesaki Campus), 2020-1, San o-cho, Isesaki-city, Gunma 372-0831, Japan Abstract : The dealing of mainly silk yarn with USA and European countries was related to the expanding of Christianity to Gunma Prefecture in Meiji era. The union silk mill was active in this region. Furthermore, many union churches were established under the influence of Jo Niijima in the western region of Gunma Prefecture. There was the Midono church that belonged to the union church in the Fujioka district, Gunma Prefecture. The union also conducted the Takayamasya sericulture school, and there were a few exchanges of people between church and the school. In powerful owners of silk yarn production, there were Christians as well as the politician, and they not only patronized the Takayamasya-bunkyojo(a small branch school)but also supported the Midono church. However, during the foundation period, many reasons such as a decline in the Christianity activity at the farming season, poor understanding the Christianity in the farm village where a lot of Christians were belonged to the comparatively smaller production, etc. made a difficult to manage the church in the rural regions, like the foundation period of Midono church. The purpose of the present research was to investigate the Takayamasya sericulture school, especially the Takayamasya-bunkyojo supported by the people who were also main patrons of the Midono church at the foundation period, on the basis of literature study.
