No.42 2007 pp.55 70 Whole-rock Major Element Chemistry for Eruptive Products of Asama-Maekake Volcano, Central Japan Masaki TAKAHASHI Maya YASUI, Yasuo ICHIKAWA, Yuko KAMIOKA, Naohide ASAKA Masayuki SAKAGAMI and Eiji TANAKA Received September 30, 2006 Major element chemistry for eruptive products of large-scale eruptions in Asama-Maekake Volcano is summarized based on analytical data of more than about 540 samples. Pumice clasts of large-scale eruptions older than 4.9cal.ka were more or less altered by weathering and their whole-rock chemistry changed; Al 2 O 3 content increased and CaO and P 2 O 5 decreased, but other components including MgO were immobile. The MgO content of eruptive products of large-scale eruption changed with time. The MgO content increased monotonously from the eruptive products of large-scale eruption in 9.8cal.ka to those in 4th century; then, it decreased from those in 1108A.D. to those in 1128A.D.. The MgO content of eruptive products increased again and came to be the maximum in 1783A.D. large-scale eruption, but those of intermediate-scale eruptions in Showa Era and 2004A.D. are somewhat lower. Andesites of Asama-Maekake Volcano were produced by magma mixing of mafic and felsic end-member magmas which are not co-magmatic. The evolution of MgO content of eruptive products reflects the change of MgO content of mafic end-menber magma tapped into the magma chamber in every large-scale eruptions. The eruptive products with high MgO content show low Al 2 O 3, Na 2 O and TiO 2 contents, suggesting that the variation of MgO content in mafic end-member magma was caused by magmatic differentiation. The Asama-Maekake Volcano has grown on the saddle between the Kurofu Volcano with the eastward opened horseshoe-shaped caldera and Hotokeiwa Volcano. The reconstructed outlines of lavas of each volcano are shown. The Sekisonzan lava dome is a lateral volcano of the Kurofu volcanic cone.
