SUMMARY The indigenous people of the Marianas, the Chamorro, were the first group of people with whom European colonists and missionaries came in contact in the Pacific region. The first missionaries from Spain systematically suppressed the Chamorro culture, culminating in a violent massacre. This was the result of the missionary motivation of spreading the Gospel but also of the eagerness to control and civilize them. The primary aim of the mission was to baptize the people even by force in order to attain the salvation of their souls. This method was justified by the thought that the eternal life gained through salvation was worth even giving up one s physical body, and by an eschatological concept held by these missionaries. The missionary work based upon the dogma and faith rooted in the literal interpretation of the Scripture led to a result totally opposed to what Jesus commanded in his Great Commission. This historical phenomenon of a relationship between a fundamentalist concept of faith and the function of religion is a relevant issue for today s world where distinct diversities of culture and values are prevalent. :
