Lesson 4 Grammar notes 4 N 1 person wa N 2 place ni imasu N 1 is at N 2 The verb imasu is used to express existence. In this sentence pattern, the speaker picks up the person as the topic, and explains where he/she is. The topic should be someone that both the speaker and the listener know about. The particle attached to N 1 is not ga, which marks the subject, but wa, which marks the topic. Hasegawa-buchoo wa irasshaimasu ka.
