Lesson 4 Grammar notes 1 wa doo deshita ka How did you find? doo is an interrogative word used to ask an impression or the state of a person or a thing. 2 Inflection of desu with a noun or na-adjective affirmative negative non-past present and/or future N/Na desu suteki desu N/Na dewa arimasen suteki dewa arimasen past N/Na deshita suteki deshita N/Na dewa arimasen deshita suteki dewa arimasen deshita The non-past form desu is used for both the present and future, just as the non-past form - -masu is. Lesson 4 Grammar notes 4 N 1 person wa N 2 place ni imasu N 1 is at N 2 The verb imasu is used to express existence. In this sentence pattern, the speaker picks up the person as the topic, and explains where he/she is. The topic should be someone that both the speaker and the listener know about. The particle attached to N 1 is not ga, which marks the subject, but wa, which marks the topic. Hasegawa-buchoo wa irasshaimasu ka.
