Abstract: Import and Export of TV programs in Japan The TV programs for which contracts were concluded for export during fiscal 2001 included: Number of programs (number of titles) = 1,675 programs (series programs are counted as one program in their entirety) Total length of time was about 42,600 hours. When considered by area, in terms of both number of programs and amount of broadcast time, those exported to Asia make up about half of the total. In terms of export program categories, in the realm of amount of time, animation dominates with around 60%. Exports to Europe are centered around animation, but the increase of drama and variety programs to Asia is reaching a remarkable level. With respect to imports (incomings), it was found that the ratio of imported programs is 4.9% out of total broadcasting time. The typical imports are movies and dramas, mostly produced in the United-States. China and Korea appeared in Japanese TV Analysis of foreign elements of Japanese made programs reveals that 7% of programs in the time slots studied are foreign-related. United-States appeared most frequently followed by European countries, China, North Korea and South Korea. In April, 2004, Winter Sonata was aired, which raise up a big boom for Korean drama in Japan. 90 % of Japanese people knows that series, and 26% of the people who watched that series said that their image of Korea has changed. 22% of them said that their interest on Korea has grown and 13% said their estimation about Korean culture has changed.
