A Bibliography of Japanese Geographers in Early-Modern and Modern Japan Foundation for Editing a Biographical Dictionary of Japanese Geographers Toshihiro Okada Laboratory of Geography, Faculty of Education, Kochi University, Kochi, Japan ABSTRACT This is an attempt to make a list of bibliographies of Japanese geographers in early-modern and modern Japan starting from the Edo period, with a view towards forming a foundation for editing a biographical dictionary of Japanese geographers. These bibliographies are chronological records of geographers, bibliographies of their works, autobiographies and reminiscenes by geographers, and obituaries and biographical works on geographers. The geographers entered here are those born in the Edo period (1603-1867), the Meiji period (1868 1912) and the Taisho period (1912-1926) in Japan. They include scholars who produced achievements in geography and geography education, with publication of at least one outstanding book. This selection criterion, however, was not applied to physical geographers. Key words: history of Japanese geography, early-modern and modern geography, chronological record, bibliography of works, autobiography, obituary, biobibliographical study 1926 15 1 161
