(II) tikeya[at]shoin.ac.jp ayakutsuki[at]shoin.ac.jp Study of katakana for English Speakers Learning Japanese (II) IKEYA Tomoko KUTSUKI Aya Faculty of Letters Faculty of Human Sciences, Kobe Shoin Women s University Abstract KATAKANA words bring difficulties for foreign learners of Japanese, because it is hard to distinguish them from original English (or other foreign) words, and they may also have synonyms in Non-KATAKANA words. This study looks into 55 Japanese learners of native English speaker about choosing Japanese words in the following 6 categories that have a pair of words in KATANAKA and in Non-KATAKANA respectively. Category 1 Bottle: BOTORU / BIN Category 2 Brush: BURASHI / FUDE Category 3 Glove: GUROBE / TEBUKURO Category 4 Potato: POTETO / IMO Category 5 Tea: THI / OCHA Category 6 Ticket: THIKETTO / KEN In conclusion, Japanese learners of native English speaker have tendencies (1) to choose KATAKANA word, when KATAKANA is embedded with the name of object, (2) to choose Non-KATAKANA word, when it refers to Japanese traditional 24 25 Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at Kobe Shoin, No. 17, 27 45, 2014.
