65 23 A Critical Discourse Analysis on Editorial about the Henoko U.S. Forces Base Issue For Japanese Language Teaching Yoshinao Najima Aiming at development from a discourse study on Japanese language education, I conducted critical discourse analysis CDA on editorial from a newspaper that is used frequently as material in reading classes. This revealed the intention of the government and the newspaper publisher, and the hitherto unknown verbal practice and ideology became clear which is difficult to grasp them merely by interpreting the literal meaning. The result leads to the next action. The reader thinks about what he or she can do, discusses with others, or contributes an article to the newspaper as an opinion piece, thereby displaying an enthusiasm for the future more actively. Critical reading becomes the starting point as opposed to society. Further, the practice of critical reading involves participating in society itself. CDA develops social literacy and can facilitate social participation. It will be indispensable for Japanese education not only for academic purposes but also for being a member of society. CDA is also regarded as a useful approach in school education. Therefore, CDA can contribute to linguistic education for the purpose of increasing social literacy. 198
