London. Melanie Klein Her Life and the Art of Psychoanalysis TOBITANI Wataru Health Centre, Osaka Kyoiku University, Kashiwara, Osaka,582-8582, Japan This biographical essay explores an enigma how Melanie Klein became an innovative psychoanalyst. Alongside her lively clinical work, she discovered and conceived of a number of important methods and concepts, such as play technique, deep interpretation, early Oedipus complex, femininity complex, the good object, the concept of positions, projective identification, primary envy, etc. As the founder of Kleinian psychoanalysis, she had a prominent observational sensitivity and far reaching imagination. She was always interested in child's deep unconscious and believed that they have capacities of communicating their unconscious phantasy. This essay also attempts to shed light on the relationship between her life and her creation of the important ideas. Her concepts can give one an impression as if they are creatures that live in someone else's mind and grow further. It was suggested that Melanie Klein had an extraordinary artistic ability to grasp meanings and express them in words and attitudes so that her child patients' minds develop further by being known accurately. It can be said that she had an immense ability to understand what was communicated to her, of which the British romantic poet, John Keats called the Negative Capability. Key Words: Melanie Klein, psychoanalysis, Kleinian school, negative capability, object relations
