DIFFICULTIES IN DAILY LIFE OF WOMEN IN RURAL CHINA Conghong Li, Yayoi Iwasaki : Doctoral course, Graduate School of Nursing, Chiba University : Graduate School of Nursing, Chiba University KEY WORDS : difficulty, daily life, women, rural China The purpose of this study was to identify difficulties in daily life of rural Chinese women and to gain nursing implications for mental health support. Data were collected from married women living in village B of county A in Anhui Province via semi-structured interviews and participant observation. A qualitative analysis was used to identify difficulties in daily life of rural women. Ten themes were yielded: excessive labor that falls upon women; high living cost that accelerates poverty; anguish about neglect and abuse by husband; anxiety about conflict within a family; anxiety about children s education and wellbeing; poor physical and mental health as a result of poverty and birth control policy; to save facemien-tzu ; Lack of knowledge for surviving the world; triple discrimination against being female, farmer and poor; diminishing community integrity that results in economical and mental health problems. Difficulties of rural Chinese women include socio-cultural dimensions, such as hard labor, poverty, policy, discrimination and mien-tzu. The results indicated the need for mental health support in adopting a holistic approach from the dimensions of the woman individual, family and the socio-cultural background. VOL. No..
