Social Psychological Approach to the Station as a Social Field ABSTRACT The social psychological meaning of a station might be defined as shown in the accompanying figure, drawn according to Lewin s (1951) topological field theory. That is, the relationship between an individual and a station might be expressed as crossed axes representing by time and space. Accordingly, the station might be a synchronic environment in which an individual might be influenced by opposing vectors such as reality vs. non reality, accidentality vs. inevitability. Firstly, the station is closely related to man, human relations, and a crowd, and they are represented in the center for their importance. The individual constitutes the essential aspects of the station. Secondly, hardware which constitute the station, such as commercial establishments and means of transportation, are located on the outside. Thirdly, the city is located in the outermost zone of the figure. The station is located in a zone called a city and plays the role of a node, a path, and a landmark.
