Yamagata Journal of Health Science, Vol. 7, 2004 2 2 Sumi MISAWA, Chizu KATAGIRI, Ryoko KOMATSU, Yohko FUJISAWA The first report focused on maternal role behaviors of women in childbirth, especially the change of their behaviors and feelings during their first pregnancy. This paper concentrates on the factors which influence those changing feelings with reference to certain times during pregnancy, and the way in which those feelings have been changed and what influences this change. Data were collected from eight pregnant women using semi-structured interviews longitudinaly from the first trimester of pregnancy to the third trimester of pregnancy. Date analysis was carried out qualitatively. The results of this study were as follows : During the first trimester of pregnancy, the important factors were "the positive reaction to being pregnant", and "the certainty of the pregnancy". During the second trimester of pregnancy, the important factor was awareness of the initial fetal movement. During the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, the important factors were "becoming accustomed to the fetal movements"and "the changing body shape as the pregnancy progressed". Factors like "seeing the ultrasound pictures during regular health checkups", "visual confirmation with the ultrasound pictures and video", "seeing the actual body shape of the fetus", "words used by the husband, mother, mother-inlaw and members outside the family", and "minor troubles" were influential factors at all stages of the pregnancy. It was also suggested that the same factor had different effects depending on what stage of the pregnancy it occurred. It is considered that a new approach is needed to help those mothers in their first pregnancy by providing information as to what kind of effects these important factors have on each stage of the pregnancy.
