To Seek Gurkha Veterans in Nepal and Malaysia: Journey from Pokhara to Penang 24 26 2013 3 1 3 18 5
This is a fieldwork report to a joint-research project Study of Foreign Workers in Malaysia headed by Prof. Masami Fujimaki of Ritsumeikan University, which is sponsored with 2013 grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. I conducted my preliminary fieldwork to Nepal and Malaysia from March 1 st through March 18 th, to search Pokhara and Penang for Gurkha ex-soldiers managing manpower agencies in both countries. As a result of the present fieldwork, I came to know the fact that those Gurkha veterans play a very important role to adjust Pokhara s supply of foreign workers and Penang s demand for them. A plausible hypothesis, that the division of roles and alliances between Nepalese manpower agencies and Malaysian counterpart, will be elucidated in my following field research.
